Because of the relationship that Schiano had with Haslam (who wanted to hire him for his NFL team) and Currie's jaunts off to the Bahamas, it seems clear that from the beginning the only real target was Greg Schiano. Everything else was just a smokescreen to cover for what had already been decided. Haslam said, "I got you hired and I REALLY think the best hire would be Greg". So sure was the AD, he didnt bother to have a search committee or even do a background check on the guy for potential problems. I am no insider but that is how the pieces of the puzzle look to me.

Since nobody else is likely to have had a REAL offer before this, perhaps NOW we can actually try to get one of the ones that are left. More likely, it is better to fire Haslam's stooge and bring Blackburn in, and go after the friggen best coaches in the country. That may mean we lose out this cycle and need to appoint an interim coach but lets actually do this right this time.

Anyone else think I am wrong and the top coaches on VN's wish list just turned us down and Currie only went after GS after getting rejected elsewhere? I really have my doubts.

More importantly, how do we get these bunch of idiot Haslams out of our beloved University and State?

They are a poison that is killing us faster and faster.

Another aspect is that UT may get outmaneuvered in the coaching shuffle. Mullens is out, Frost likely to Nebraska, with Arkansas and Tx A&M among others in the mix. It is clear that UT made a false start and lost position.

I think is the real fear. The blowback will make the job a pariah ...

There a two solutions. One ... hire Les Miles along with an OC with the understanding that the OC will be HC in < 5 years.

Two .. hire Lane Kiffin. He won't care about the blowback. He'll be eager to get back to P5 play.

I hope you're right. If we already went through a bunch of other candidates and got all the way to Schiano, we're boned. Not that I would take that guy. But our prospects after this debacle may be pretty grim. I'm still glad we dodged a bullet today though.

I just hope this Schiano kerfuffle hasn't kw eer ed* the deal on UT being able to now bring in a decent coach - one who's worth the money we're going to throw at him. The highest-profile HC candidates are being scooped up by other needy programs at a pretty rapid pace now and there's not going to be much left in the cupboard after Currie gets his search engine back on track. Could be that our best option is going to winnow down to Kiffin 2.0 by the time the dust has settled.

He kicked a few tires maybe but clearly the sorriest excuse for a coach search I've ever seen.

Goes to the Bahamas in the middle of a coaching search, the week before the season ended. It’s the most important week! Should’ve nailed down a good hire.

Now that he’s pissed away the week on the beach, we have to compete with Arkansas and TAM without Kelly available. Campbel apparently just worked out an extension. Timing timing timing....what a moron. The landscape dramatically changed while he was sun bathing and screwing o

Agree. Day after season ends and we hire him? Ok

I would bet that Shiano is the only candidate that has been approached in this whole debacle. Currie thought he knew what was best for us stoooopid rednecks.

Rumor (take it for what it is worth) has it that Currie didn't even know about the Penn St stuff until this morning.
