Schaeffer vs. La Tech

For those of you that saw the game - did it look like Schaeffer was really impatient in the pocket? Especially early in the game, it looked to me like he was locked on his primary receiver and if it wasn't there he took off. He regrouped and made a nice TD throw to Meachem later in the game, but it's the first time this year that Schaeffer has really looked like a freshman to me.

I've seen from the beginning that he's been impatient in the pocket. Luckily the offensive line is killer, so it will buy him more time. But when worse comes to worse, especially against Auburn, Schaeffer is really going to start feeling the heat and I think making some bad decisions.

Ainge will probably be another story. He can see what's coming at him from all sides, making it very tough to pressure him. And when he does leave the pocket, he can still make awesome throws. So whether or not UT beats Auburn, I think, will be based on how well Auburn's pass coverage is, because rushing will prove to be relatively ineffective against Ainge.

But, I have every confidence the Vols can get it done.

I already mentioned in another thread that Schaeffer hasnt gained the ability to feel pressure yet. Against LaTech, the one drive he looked good in was when we were already way ahead and he could relax and not try to focus on "feeling the incoming pressure", which had him worrying about not getting hit and fumbling again. Physically he is an awesome player, he just doesnt have the mental game yet. He should be forced to stay in the pocket and work the game from there more... he just loves to take off and run too much, giving up too easily on plays. Disappointing actually, I had thought going into the Florida game that he was the better of the two QBs. Alot has changed, and i think part of it is he himself thinking too much about not making mistakes, etc and not going in to dominate. Ainge seems to fear nothing half the time, running around and throwing across his body into double coverage. That boy can thread the needle when needed.

I was at the game and Schaeffer did not look comfortable in the pocket. As LaTech showed, if you can get a decent pass rush on (like say Pollack @ GA), then his mobility is limited. Ainge came in, took control of the game, and led them out of the hole. I think the Auburn game may be the one to separate the two.

Anything is possible but I think it will be near impossible for Schaeffer to play on the level with Ainge. Not only does he have a rocket arm that is very accurate, but I think he is as calm (and suprisingly elusive) as any freshman I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong, I think Schaeffer can still contribute but I don't see him ever getting more series than Ainge.

Shaeffer didn't look so good and Ainge looked great once again.
Ainge's accurancy is amazing, he puts the ball were only his WR (Fayton) can reach it. I keep hearing the WR's say "we have to help out our freshman QB's". That's great that the coach's have drilled that in there heads and the team understands.
