to be learned here for those of us who think we can fire Butch and hire Jesus himself.

Those are 3 of the top 7 jobs in the country and they each hired no-names or previous failed head coaches. Don't be naive and think we're going to do any better.

This is not to say those coaches will fail - just that if we fired Butch and hired someone with no HC experience, or one that had been fired from Ole Miss, we'd throw a fit.

Just be careful what you wish for.

I agree. Programs across the country can pay a nice salary. I think coaches are starting to recognize that the grass isn't always greener. If a guy finds a place where he and his family are comfortable and happy, I doubt he'd be all that anxious to uproot them and move into the meat grinder that is the SEC. Find a coach who fits and give him time to build. Butch can recruit. He's developing at this level. I'm hopeful he's our guy for years to come. All he needs to do is make sure he's a good CEO and face of the program. Just surround himself with top assistants who can recruit and he'll be fine.

I would add McElwain. He was not a homerun either.

The SEC has struggled in football to lure in top coaches the last few years for whatever reason.

So LSU fired their winningest coach of all time to hire a guy with a 10-25 coaching record.

When did Mike Hamilton become LSU's AD?

Because Saban has changed the landscape for coaching. Its not just Saban but he will get the credit. This entire state will overlook anything depending on the success of that football team.

Think before you talk.

Helton seems to be doing fire at USC, I think they're ranked 12.

The Jury is still out with Smart and Coach O. It's Smart's first year and he's already upset a good Auburn team and had a better record than Butch's first year.

Well he has won back to back SEC east titles. Maybe not a home run hire but Florida is getting a better ROI than Tennessee

Smart also inherited a team that has had a combine 50-17 record over the last 5 years.

What big time coach is gonna come here??? Too many schools that rival our tradition are hiring lower tiered candidates. The path to the national championship is available to any power 5 school and established coaches aren't jumping ship. The LSU hire in particular is very interesting. Not only do they rival our tradition, they have much much more instate talent for an established coach to be attracted to than us.

I wonder who Texas can get with all that money they are willing to throw around? Herman? Does he not have some head scratching losses like most coaches do??

We've got Butch, and he's working his butt off. Give the man more time. Everyone must agree that he has performed better here than strong did at Texas.

Are you seriously trying to compare the UGA team that Smart took over to the Tennessee team that Jones took over?

UGA was 10-3 and loaded with talent. Butch took over a team that had just gone 15-21 (4-19 SEC) over 3 years, and a completely depleted roster.

I think you missed the point. None of these guys were considered lead pipe lock, drop $5 or $6 million per year in their lap, homerun types when they were first hired. With the exception of Smart, I'm not sure if any of those guys listed were the first or even second choice for their respective schools.

With a hell of a lot more talent than butch had. Nice agenda.

Florida also ended last season with 3 straight losses and unranked, just like they are poised to do this year. Only a fool would beat their chest over that 'brand' of success. Tennessee wins today. We end up with a better record, a better bowl, and higher ranked. Maybe we should call you Lyle with your consistently gumpian level posts.

Smart didn't inherit the train wreck Butch did....let's be clear on that. He inherited a roster and program that was well on solid foundation....and honestly did not need a new HC.

Coach O completely turned USC's season around when they fired Kiffin....he has come a long way from when he was at Ole Miss....I think with the right coordinators he will be just fine...and plenty of talent already there so he doesn't have to turn much around.

Helton got spanked by Bama...but it was the first game of the year...very young team...with not much depth but a ton of talent. He is in a very bad conference by recent year's PAC standards.

None of these guys have had to come in from behind the worse Major Conference HC of the last 50 years "Derek Dooley" and rebuild EVERYTHING...the mental vision of always quitting and losing...Kentucky football level talent at the majority of key positions...one whole recruiting year of ZERO offensive linemen signed for a class.

These are reasons why Butch is getting upset....yeah we didn't win the East. But we are on the cuff of the FREAKING SUGAR BOWL....means a lot to me at least to be going to it...and not facing Bama again to get the hell kicked out of us twice in one season by them then go to a lower tier bowl. To many on here are down playing that in itself....EAST is a must...but not winning it is a blessing.

I would take Butch all day, any day over Ogre and Smart.

What in the world is LSU thinking? Think about it this way. If a school was looking for a head coach, and it came down to Miles and Ogre, who would the alums be clamoring for. It would be Miles and it wouldn't be close.

SAme scenario for Richt and Smart.

Sometimes making a change just for the sake of making a change Is stupid. LSU's AD should be fired ASAP.

Funny, but Helton has the same record as Butch this season. Which is "doing just fine" for Helton, but not for Butch.

Especially when you have a loud piece of your fan base who chokes and grouses over a winning coach making $4 million per yer in the SEC. Anybody knocking down more than they do, often around $35/$40K per year, just cannot deserve it, nobody needs to make more than $100K per year ever. Reminds me of myself when I first moved to LA decades ago, a realtor tried to get me to purchase a house for $200K. I told him for that much money I needed columns, pastures, and Tennessee Walking horses grazing in them. Kicking my own donk a zillion times over as the same house is now in the $800/$900K range. Perspective when it comes to money ya'll, multi millions is what it takes to be somewhat competitive for decent coaching in the SEC. It's not like making the big bucks managing a DQ in Bucksnort, TN.
