SC Fans wishful thinking.

I have been reading quite a bit on the SC forums and how their fans think they will go all the way and go to the SEC championships. The latest post includes predictions from one of their fans, I thought I would share it not only for the prediction scores for the Tenn/SC game, but for the rest of their games, including at Florida. This is a hoot.




We have on our hands, an unbelievably perfect opprotunity as well as one hell of a stiff challenge. It lays out as follows...

#7 Tennessee Volunteers Vols could be ranked higher after polls.
This game is for obvious reasons off the scale in terms of pivotal. Lose this game and SECCCG is out of the question. It goes back to the one game at a time cliche. Only this time, it is more like one war at a time.
The Vols are high off of an emotional win against rival Alabama where Bama had held a strong advantage in recent games. Will the Vols have enough emotion left in the tank? Or, will SC continue that slow yet steady progression they have shown all year, send a message to the Razorbacks and cause the Florida faithfull to strap on their shartoons?
Prediction: SC 24 TN 17.

#15 Arkansas Razorbacks
Another huge showdown in Williams Brice Stadium Featuring the nations hottest running back from Arkansas against The talented recieving corps from SC complimented b a lightning fast D. Arkansas could be ranked well into the top 10 by game time and would be the 3rd highly ranked SEC opponent to enter Williams Brice this year. Houston Nutt and his Razorbacks will be riding high after big wins over several lesser opponents prior to this game. Will the Gamecocks be matured and gelled enough to pull the upset and continue the dream? Or will arkansas continue their march to sec perfection?
Prediction: SC 21 Ark 16

#9 Florida Gators

If 2 top 12 teams were not enough, then add a third to the gauntlet. The Florida Gators look to still only have one loss on thier record assuming they take care of a terrible UGA team at the cocktail party. This game will be monumental and if the gamecocks can set the stage with wins over Tennessee and Arkansas, all eyes will be on Florida Field as the eastern division title game between the Old Ball Coach and his former team headed by Urban Meyer will unfold. Meyer has made strides with his sproption offense but has still one Nut left to crack. Both teams could be at the top of their games and the Swamp will be rocking. Can the Steve Spurrier come up with another gem against his former team at their house? It is certainly within his ability and he is beginning to obtain a team worthy of such a great victory.
Prediction: SC 28 UF 24

Middle Tennessee State

This game will by all means be a tune up for the finale against arch rival Clemson who will likely be another top 10 team, but SOS will not allow his gamecocks to overlook and the gamecocks will prevail in large margin.
Prediction: SC 45 M Tenn St 10

#12 Clemson Tigers

The Battle of respective divisional champions and heated rivals. This game goes beyond comprehension if the aformentioned unfolds with any accuracy. I will save a prediction for this game only leaving you with this comment.
Atrociously Exciting.

We have an awesome opportunity ahead my friends. One of the toughest late season opponent fields awaits us as all teams we play could be near or in the top 10 with the acception of Middle Tennessee State. Support the team with great enthusiasm and Believe!

I will be surprised if they win 2 of those games, and completely shocked if they win 3.

I know right! I think the only one they will win is vs Middle Tenn State. I just find it funny to read their posts and how they think they will win out, there is no "its going to be a tough game" or an "I'm worried about this game." I just can't wait til one of these teams or most of these teams will beat them and then what will they be saying?? :)

I wouldn't be shocked if the gamecocks beat us -- extremely disappointed, but not shocked... SEC football is a beatch.

Of course our fans are going to have wishful thinking, we did it last year why not this year? Most of us know how difficult our remaining schedule is, and we are just taking it one game at a time, but there is no way to get out of the back of our mind that it is still a possibility. Besides, what is the reason for showing up if there is no hope?

I am glad that Bama played us so close. Like David Ligon said in post game interviews, "This week of practice will be...interesting." I have a feeling the UT players are going to have a little extra incentive to win this game.

i would be sick, sick, and sicker the whole next week, in fact when they beat us last year i got up middle of night, threw up and did not recover for two days, am i overinvested???? i only wished it on spurrier when i was upchucking (not really he is a great coach, and i love beating him, it was really bad food followed by god awful vol football). i do not know how we can underestimate anyone from here on out after bama. go vols

Wishful thinking is one thing.

Full-blown dimentia is quite another.

I don't think anybody is underestimating SC, ESPECIALLY CPF. He won't let the team look ahead when Steve Spurrier is on the other sideline.

However, final game scores cannot be the only thing we look at. Tennessee's only 2 poor games, at least in terms of yardage differential, have been Florida and Air Force. I know yardage totals don't win games, but more often than not, they tell a huge story.

Tennessee killed Alabama in yardage total and should have won by 17+.

Ok so if Tennessee closed out the season last year with wins over us, Arkansas, and Florida, you wouldn't think it was a possibility to do it again this year? I know those teams are a little better this year, but so are we, and from what I have seen we are getting better every game. Like I said we are gong to take it one game at a time. Call it "full-blown dimentia" if you want to, but before we went on our streak last year people were saying the same thing.

UT, UF, and Ark are not just a LITTLE better this year. UT has turned 180 degrees from last year, at this point in the season last year they were unispired and really had nothing left to play for, beating a team that didn't show any heart is not that big of an accomplishment imo

Is that just your opinion or do you have some facts to support that statement? At this time last year we were coming off of a 37-14 loss to Bama, and a 48-7 loss to Auburn. The only thing we really lost off of last years team was DB Johnathan Josheph and FS Ko Simpson. So secondary should be our weakness, right...? Well no not really, with todays updated stats from the NCAA, we have the #8 pass defense in the nation. Yeah we had a 1 bad game this year against UGA, but we have made a complete turnaround with Newton at qb. So how do you figure we are not better than last year?

I'm not discounting SC. I think they are a very dangerous team. I hope that there is no over confidence in the win over turnover prone Vandy. Make no mistake Vols will come to Columbia prepared.

duckhunter, you're making hte same mistake that UGa fans made prior to us coming in, and something we, as fans, picked up on before that game.

#8 Pass defense in the nation. Who have you played that's had a great passing attack? Wofford? Florida Atlantic? Miss. State? That #8 is very very misleading, and I wouldn't be so quick to throw that out there. Georgia made the same mistake with their "D" and look where it got them. UT has a passing attack that's leaps and bounds above any of the teams you've played to date.

That being said, it'll prolly be a good game, but I honestly see your secondary getting exposed for what they are.

Let's compare the first 7 games from this season:

W 18-0 @ Miss State (2-6)
L 0-18 v. Georgia (6-2)
W 27-20 v. Wofford (D-1AA)
W 45-6 v. FAU (2-5)
L 17-24 v. Auburn (7-1)
W 24-17 @ Kentucky (3-4)
W 31-13 @ Vanderbilt (3-5)

to last season:

W 24-15 v. Central Florida (8-5)
L 15-17 @ Georgia (10-3)
L 14-37 @ Alabama (10-2)
W 45-20 v. Troy (4-7)
L 7-48 @ Auburn (9-3)
W 44-16 v. Kentucky (3-8)
W 35-28 v. Vanderbilt (5-6)

You have a better record this season, but your schedule was significantly more difficult last season.

I will say this in your favor, the first couple games of this season, you didn't have Newton at QB, and your team has improved a lot under Newton. If Newton were still sitting at WR, you'd have no chance. Newton IS your game in this one.

Also, you can try to take solace in that #18 pass D, but let's look at the passing yardage ranking for the 6 D-1A teams S.C. has faced:

Auburn #80
Kentucky #24
Georgia #75
Vanderbilt #99
FAU #83
Miss State #85

You probably don't want to get into with me and stats. Since you haven't been here long, I will let you know that IMO, I probably spend as much time as anybody looking at boring crap like this. Does it mean I *know* more? Absolutely not. However, to find the TRUE meaning of the stats, you have to dig deeper.

I wouldn't say im making a mistake coming in, I know Tennessee is a good team, they always are. This almost always seems to be a tough hard fought game, I wouldn't expect anything different. I have also said in another thread if I had to be, with the line the way it is I would take Tennessee.

Yeah, shouldn't have said mistake, it's more of a blind faith in misleading stats due to the quality of your opponents.

It doesn't matter who we have played, we have done what we needed to do in all of those games. The pass defense is clearly the strength of this team, as it was last year when we finished the season top 15. No one has been able to pass on us this year with any kind of sucess. Except maybe Kentucky when we were backed up in a prevent they went underneath and get a good bit of yards at the end of the game. We held Vandy to 76 yards passing last week, until the last drive of the game when we went into the prevent. Tennessee may very well win this game, but it will be a low scoring game where they run the ball and play defense. If Tennessee comes out and tries to beat us with the pass, that is probably our only chance of winning, because we will force mistakes that way.

Also I would just like to throw this in there for those of you that keep highlighting that Wofford game, I could do the same thing with your Air Force game this year. When you play against that triple option offense and your not used to it, things can happen. We were up 24-3 in that game, and they got hot on the ground and went on a few long scoring drives.

Um, no offense, but this is incredibly ignorant. It DOES matter who you play. In fact, it means almost everything.

This is a good point. I like the point and stand a bit corrected. However, you have to admit, Air Force >>>>>>>>>>>> Wofford.
