SBN evaluates the Vols

I believe the talent level was there. But when you're top 10 and 5th ranked recruiting classes are not being developed correctly, and your coaches won't deviate from the "chart", and you can't do a QB sneak from friggin 1 yard line because you've failed to let him practice from under center AT ALL, then the record more reflects your coaching staff more than your talent.

Certainly had more talent than a 4 win team....just not near enough talent to win 9 or 10 like so many have wanted to portray. Make no mistake, to get where we want to, gotta pair much, much better coaching with a turned-over, much improved roster.

We had the 12th most talented roster in the nation going in to the season. We had a sizeable talent advantage over South Carolina, vandy, Kentucky, Missouri, and Florida. Last year was a clinic on bad coaching, player mismanagement, and a team flat out quiting on their coach.

I just read that SBN voted the 2017 Vols the biggest underachievers. I betting that changes with Pruitt and his staff. The dark days are behind us.....brighter days on the horizon guys.

Lack of talent and poor coaching means bad results

When UT cannot produce a single conference win in a season there ARE brighter days ahead. There literally is no where to go but up as we were flat dead worst.

To say the Vols’ 2017 football season was a disappointment is an understatement. The Vols put together their worst season in school history, and it cost Butch Jones his job.

And in news that will surprise nobody, the Vols were deemed the biggest underachievers of the 2017 football season by SB Nation.

According to SB Nation, the reason the Vols were the biggest underachievers this season (aside from the obvious) was because of the amount of talent on the roster compared to the results the team earned. According to SB Nation’s metric, the Vols were 8th in recruiting heading into the 2017 season (based on a running four year average of their national placement in the 247Sports Composite rankings). Which makes their 4-8 finish all the more disappointing.

Ouch.

I agree though.

The real question is what should we expect from the talent coming back? The new talent coming in? Will CJP and the new staff be able to produce better results?

I see an opportunity for the 2018 Vols to right the ship in dramatic fashion.

I expect them to take advantage of their opportunity.

I think the entire point of this thread and the SBN vote cited is that there actually wasn't a lack of talent, at least nowhere near a 4-8 lack of talent, and that the coaching just may have been exceptionally poor.

If you rewind the tape to Jan 2013 the problems and solutions were very similar. Get rid of the Dooley stench and life will be much better under Butch, yada yada.

I hope for once UT got it right! It's time to start winning consistently.

Who knew Butch was going to keep lining up checkers on a chess board?

The only time we played better was our bowl games. With Butch we never seemed to get better as the year went along.

I expect better from CJP.

Changing over to a 3-4 is a huge gamble. That’s one of my biggest concerns.
