Say We Beat West Virginia...

So much hinges on the play of our QB (who will emerge?) and our OL , not making any predictions. Our 'D' will be decent. Hope we have the right coaches to turn this thing around.

I know you have doubts. We'll surprise some people this year. I think coaching is going to make a huge difference.

I do have doubts, hard not to. But my response had more to do specifically with the idea that we’re gonna best a very good WVU team handily. I think we have a decent chance to beat them, but it’ll very likely be a struggle to say the least imo.

If we beat Florida in any way shape or form it wont be because of the "Neyland Stadium Advantage".

It'll be because we have a football coach for once getting the most out of his players with everyone buying in.

Also if we start 4 and 0 I'm going streaking.

I would be smitten if we dropped the opening game and went on to beat Florida and Georgia. SEC matters more. Highly unlikely that happens though. We have a higher probability of going 2-3 to start out.

If WVU is fairly one sided offensively (mostly passing) I think we might have more of a chance. Even last year rush defense was what imo killed us most.if they force the passing game I think we can sell out and get after it provided we have enough offense to get us into the fourth. If we can generate consistent offense and defense i think we could very well go 4 and 0 and maybe even stay competitive with georgia. Georgia loses both Michel and Chubb if I'm not mistaken so we may have an easier time with the run game this year. Like I said I'm almost positive the rush was what wore our out of shape team out last year by halftime along with our offenses struggles. If we can keep them honest, we might be better than expected.

Maybe I’m an idiot, but you’d think there are ways to easily beat a team like WVU.

On defense, blitz the frick out of them, play press and hit their receivers every time they catch it.

On offense, play ball control and run it behind #73 (if he’s back🙏🙏🙏). This’ll keep their offense on the field and defense will wear down. Their run defense is trash so we’re probably gonna have success on the ground.

But.......

On the other hand, I might be severely overestimating our rosters ability to actually execute a game plan like that.

#73 would be a tired puppy by half. And blitzing can’t work every time, even most of the time. It’s going to be a big challenge for UT given the lack of o-lineman, new schemes, QB situation. Defense is going to have to play lights out because I don’t see your o scoring much. Better have a good kicking game.

Well obviously not every play with Trey Smith. These are just generalities, really. But people are making it sound like WVU is the ‘01 Rams on offense. I watched a mediocre VT team with a true freshman QB handle them with ease last year. And if we can’t score on one of the worst defenses in the NCAA, then it truly will be a long season.

Keep in mind our best win last year was 5-6 Georgia Tech. In overtime. 42-41. Beat UMass (UMass!) by 4. In other words, the Mountaineers' 2017 highlight reel beats our 2017 highlight reel. By a lot.

You're comparing the Tennessee teams of old to last season's W Va. It's much more sobering to compare the Vols of 2017 to them.

NOT saying we can't beat W Va this September. Only that it won't be "easily."

2017 was the worst ever for us in over 120 seasons. Their highlights aren't that much better.

Should we expect new worsts for 2018?

With better coaches coming up with better game plans(That's a biggie.) I expect a better team with better results.

Butch had the same game plan for all the games(Except bowl games.) he was at UT. No wonder UMASS just like everyone else could take advantage of our scheme. Just by playing the odds they were in games when they should be down by 30.

Butch wanted to keep it a low scoring game against the scrub teams. Butch was playing checkers on a chess board.

Yeah, sure, absolutely.

But every football team starts from a departure point, which is the previous season's team. The current team may be significantly better, or worse, but until we see them play, we have really limited information on the current squad.

So we take what we most recently knew, last year, and adjust up or down based on what we see of practices, coach talk, player attitudes and off-field activities. We read really muddy tea leaves, in other words.

The point of departure (how we did last year) may not be super-accurate for predicting this year...but it's really the best indicator available before the season begins.

*shrug* just the way it is.

Here's hoping we're hugely improved. Go Vols!

What??

The final score was 24-31.

We were 15yds away from tying the game in the final seconds. Uncharacteristically our top receiver let a pass thrown slightly behind him slip through his arms.

Team statistics were similar and neither team ever lead by more than 7.

That's not an easy win.

We beat WVA and there will be a surplus of posts gently explaining how much they suck and how insignificant the win actually is.
