He was guest speaker at a dinner for the boys and girls club. I came away from the event thinking just how lucky we are to have him as head coach at The University of Tennessee. With time, he will have us dominating the league again and I for one am willing to be patient as a fan until this happens. He has a plan in place and given time it will lead to championships. Im convinced of that. Go Vols!

One of the best ones he told was when he touched on the topic of social media..said he had a linebacker on squad last year that couldnt pick up anything the coaches told him verbally but was a texting master. So he told Thompson to sit him in front of a blackboard and communicate with him via text.....
A few things he touched on about the team:
-The last couple of years recruiting wise have our O-line exactly where he wants them to be (skill, talent, depth and potential).
-He is very excited about our talent at the skill positions.
-Didnt seem concerned about Brays performance in the spring game and mentioned the fact that he is basically throwing to a brand new set of recievers.
-Next years punt returner will be one of the guys coming in from this years recruiting class.

As you say, the jury is still out on the coaching ability thing, but one thing is certain. He has all the intangibles to be great. If his coaching abilities are at least 80% as good as his speaking and making people like him skills, he will be a great. I do believe he has the right plan in place and we will see it come together over the next few years. I'm still not ready, as some on here are, to go ahead and order SECCG tickets for next year yet as I still think we have a ways to go talent-wise, at least. If he can bring in the right top 5-10 recruiting class this year, however, we will at least have the opportunity to be in the mix.

This. Exactly this. Derek Dooley is someone you want representing your program, the face of your university. If he can coach, he will be great for UT.

Yes, there is something about being a good public speaker that really qualifies one as a football coach! He certainly has enough noses up his butt now. And if he does turn out to be a decent coach, he is going to run out of room for noses in his derriere at this rate.

We will really see what kind of coach he is about 3 years from now.

I think coach Dooley is going to be a great coach. This season should be a vast improvement over last season. I think the Vols are going to be competitive in every game this year, and may even pull a upset or two. The future seems brighter than it has been in a number of years.

believe in a coach again that they are making a huge leap by saying Dooley is the answer. I said above he is a class act and represents well but his coaching and recruiting is a big question mark imo. Maybe when we start winning games where we are underdogs I and many others will gradually convert. Let's be careful less we get our hearts broken again. Maybe Reagan had it right "trust but verify".

I hope Dooley wins so we can have another coach to last us a couple decades. I miss the good ole days of program stability.

How is his recruiting unproven? He kept Kiffin's class together while adding a few pieces and had a very solid class this year that has addressed our needs.

It sounds like you are basing his recruiting ability off of the fact that we finished in the middle of the SEC pack in recruiting, which I have seen you post before. You're failing to realize that addressing needs means more than the final ranking of the class and it cannot be argued that Dooley has not addressed our needs.

I think many on here base their judgement of recruiting off the presence or, in this case, the lack of star power in the recruiting class. I suppose in a way we all do. One of the things many seem to misjudge about our past two recruiting classes is the fact that, not only did we fill a lot of needs, we recruited a boatload of big uglies, which pushes your overall class ranking down because most of these guys aren't ranked that well. IMHO, there is a reason the recruiting services don't go back (after four or five years) and re-rank their recruiting classes to show just how accurate their services are. It would show the overall flawed system of ranking high school kids on how well they are going to develop and perform at the next level. His recruiting prowess won't be able to be judged either way until a few years pass and we see whether he can evaluate talent and, subsequently, develop it into SEC caliber players.
