Saturday Actually Could Have Been Much Worse

Your argument makes sense.

My beef with Danielson was that he NEVER could say anything nice about Tennessee. If he had been announcing Saturday’s game it would have been all talk about Georgias poor defense performance or what Stickton needed to do to get them in the lead. He would have never mentioned the 9/9 199 yards and the master class of offense the late to the game transfer Aguilar was putting on. Brazzells catch and score wouldn’t have been because he went up and won the battle, it would have been because the Georgia DB tripped.

It’s like it hurts the announcers heads to ever say anything positive about Tennessee.
Danielson rarely had reason to say anything nice about Tennessee. He started doing the CBS games in 2006. How complimentary could one be about Tennessee in big games from 2006-2023? How many games did we win that he called? 4 or 5? And he probably called 30 or more of our games through the years.

The only good thing about the loss is that it is early in the season and we still have enough schedule left to make a run. It would be much more painful if that had been the championship game or a playoff game. That means this team needs to keep the internal fire for revenge in case we meet them again down the line. It ain't over, but we have to get much more aggressive in our remaining games.

I was in Philly for something during this game. I was watching at the hotel restaurant bar and a former UT player (recent at that time) came in. For the life of me can't remember who it was, but I remember thinking it probably wasn't the best time to try to talk to him. He had been drafted and if I remember correctly was known as one of the stronger players at UT. I keep seeing Ndamukong Suh's face which is why I'm struggling to remember. I can't even remember where NS went to college.

Update: Darwin Walker. Not sure why he would be at the hotel.
Darwin Played at the Eagles from 2000 to 2006 and I think he was the strongest Vol back in the day bench pressing 515 pounds. So makes sense he'd be in a hotel in Philadelphia around that time.

Danielson, in a role of covering the best SEC game that week, promoted whoever the standard bearer of the conference was at the time. When he first joined that game it was UF, then it was Alabama for a bunch of years, then towards the end of his time there it was UGA.

He never said anything good about Tennessee, and a bunch of other teams, because they largely stunk. If they won, they would be playing spoiler to whoever the SEC standard bearer was. Tennessee was in a unique position during his years there because we basically never were any good, but were still a good draw on television as a big program, so it seemed like he bad-mouthed us all the time.

You make a great argument and are probably right. Still...would it hurt to say one good thing about the other team? Throw their fans a bone.

Joe Tessitore just about comes out of his shoes anytime someone breaks off for more than 25 yards. I wonder how many drinks he spills during the course of a broadcast :) ?

He did occasionally say good things about Tennessee on occasions when they were warranted. They glowed about Hooker during the 2022 UF and Alabama games. I remember them saying good things about Dobbs. Unfortunately, the bright spots were pretty few and far between.

A few years ago, I remember I did the work and figured out what our record in the CBS 3:30 game from Fulmer's firing until whatever year it was at the time (this was probably 2018 or 2019). If memory serves, we were something like 5-30. If you called 35 games that a particular team played in over a number of years and they won 5 of them, you wouldn't have much good to say about them.

Without going back and watching all the CBS games in their entirety, I'm all but positive you're just having selective memory about him never saying anything nice. But as 05 said, there was minimal for Danielson to praise. Tennessee was 12-37 on CBS from 2006-2023, were outscored a total 1630-1121, and lost 17 games by 17+ points (my own determination of being whipped cause that's 3 possessions) while only winning 4 games by 17+.
