“Last year I was practicing at linebacker, I was getting in the film, I was finally getting that edge, and then I switched to safety. It was crazy. I mean, you’ve got to know both (linebacker and safety) at linebacker, but I definitely was feeling happy when I got moved back.

“It’s the same thing with Maybin and Cortez. Cortez switched from safety to linebacker, and Maybin, too. It really helps your game, to see it from the back end and then knowing the run fits. It helps you from both angles.”

Moving back to linebacker also means Sapp gets to add 10 pounds rather drop 10 or more pounds. Coaches eventually want him in the 230-pound range, and he said he’ll get there in time.

Tennessee Vols football's Quart'e Sapp hoping for big spring

Admittedly, Sapp didn’t play fast when he first arrived at Tennessee. Thinking slowed him down. “Last year, I was kind of hesitant,” he said. “I didn’t know as much what I was doing. That kind of slowed me down. The biggest thing for me was my speed, so if I can’t play as fast, that’s going to hurt me.”

Speed will work well in Bob Shoop’s defense. Aggressiveness is the key for the Vols’ first-year defensive coordinator.

“We’re predominantly looking to get more after the quarterback,” Sapp said.

For Tennessee linebacker, speed is key to success

When you rarely blitz and sometimes even drop a DE into coverage against a mobile QB on 3rd and 8+; it often results in disappointing outcomes.

I sincerely hope that we develop a defensive scheme (philosophy) where people blitz from various positions - constantly. From the CB, LB, SS, etc. The offense has way too many advantages (knows the play, knows the snap count, less official scrutiny, etc.) the defense has to do something to get/keep them out of rhythm. Unless you have a front 4 which pressures the QB on every play, you need a blitzing (somebody) to take pressure off the DBs.

How about a front 4 that pressures the QB on every play (which this team certainly has the talent to do that)

AND

Blitzing the living crap outta the QB?

I'm not greedy. :)

I don't want to be that guy, but I'm going to be that guy. Bowling Green & Dieter love our lockdown CBs.

Ok "That Guy", Martin did not play against Bowling Green, so they didnt face one of our lockdown corners that will be on the field this year. He will make a big difference along with more experience for our other corners

Exactly. And aint seen Osbourne neither, nor late-season version of Foreman. And our next safeties may well be more athletic and faster than the last. Has not seen a Shoop D. And not seen our 2016 pass rush. But, hey, I hope he does think he knows all about what we have. :loco:

Unfortunately we get to face Dieter again this year too. Hopefully with different results.

What team is he with now?

Nevermind, googled it. But "hopefully with different results"? No, I hope his team loses to us by 29, just the same as last year.

No doubt in that respect. But if Dieter has the same numbers he did against us last year that likely won't be the case. Bama D is a little better than BG's.

We simply didn't get good pressure on Dieter rushing just 4, those CB's would looked a lot better if Dieter was running for his life instead of having enough time to read the sports section of the daily news.

It wasn't Dieter that was killing us, it was his QB dropping dimes.

It was a combined effort. Dieter was blowing by our secondary. But as a couple other posters mentioned, different year, different secondary. Lots of speed back there now. But don't think Dieter can't play. Kid is pretty good.

Dieter is a WR. Transferred to Alabama.

Keep in mind Tennessee was without Martinez (one game suspension), McNeil (entire game) and TKjr (1st half) and that played a big role in Johnson's and Dieter's first half success as Berry, Foreman and Moseley struggled.
BG scored a TD to start the second half and had both Dieter and Moore (their leading receiver and playmaker returned from a first half suspension) but to no avail as Tennessee took control from mid-third qtr on

Dieter went for 0 matched against Sutton, our only lockdown corner to play

Worth noting that his success was against Foreman (nickle) and Moseley (CB) and to be fair, safety coverage was not up to par and exploited in the first half as well
