Whether you like CBJ or not, there's no question that it's not the "same old story at Tennessee". Not if that same old story, as it has been since Fulmer's final days, is 6 years (using 2009-2014 as the reference mark) of frustration punctuated by several humiliating losses on the conference and national stage. No...CBJ has clearly raised the talent level at UT by several notches, and this year, for the first time in a long time, UT has led in every one of their games, and has not been "thumped" by anyone. Well, yet (tossing the NegaVols a bone here).
For the first time in a long time, UT will go bowling for the 2nd year in a row. Every streak has to start somewhere, and there's every reason to believe that UT is back in the bowl game for now, and the foreseeable future. Not the same old story.
On the other hand, there is concern, and rightfully so at some of the decisions this staff has made in critical situations. At least one, and possibly more of those calls probably cost us a victory. Then there's Josh Dobbs: a talented baller who can amaze you with his feet, and give you an ulcer with his arm. He's doing the best he can, and that's all you can ask of him. You can win in the SEC without a blue chip QB, but all of the other pieces of a championship team have to be in place. We're not there, yet.
Injuries have hurt this team. Injuries happen. But when you're "one and a half deep" across the board, as this team is, then injuries can spell the difference between a close win, and a close loss.
If I had a legitimate gripe about this team, and I believe I do, it's in-game coaching and player development. You can't teach speed, but you can teach just about everything else. And please...please...can we get rid of the "3 times up the middle and then punt" when we're nursing a late lead? It's not working, and it's not fooling anyone. Time for a new plan in that situation.
Two games left, and then a bowl. Personally, I think the litmus test for this staff, for this season, will be how they handle what will be a very emotional scene in Columbia, and then a season finale at home against a Vandy team that is our equivalent of a very persistent case of the 'roids. Two games, and a lot hanging in the balance for Team 119. If CBJ wants to silence his critics, he has three remaining games in which to cue the crickets for the offseason.
As for me, I think changes are needed on the staff. The UF game did it for me. Let me point out that I am still a rabid Vol fan; I still support UT; and I cheer for the Vols to win every game. I just no longer let what UT does (or doesn't do) on Saturdays ruin my day, week, or year. The yard still has to get mowed.
Call me a fence-sitter if you will, but I reserve the right to praise this staff when they call a good game, and also to question them when they toss a head-scratcher. They get paid a lot of money to win football games. I'm a stockholder. I can and will call them out when they make bad decisions that affect my investment.
Flame away.
Go Vols.
