I feel like I've been a little unfair to the UT football program lately. I'm thinking about backing off the negativity and just accepting things for what they are now. But not without one more negative shot - lol!
The sad truth is that UT is now one of the SEC's lower programs. This was confirmed with the hiring of an inexperienced head coach and AD. This is something that a top-flight program like Alabama would never do in a million years. It shows where we are in comparison to them - light years behind.
We are not going to challenge Alabama for SEC supremacy as long as Nicky is the head coach of those thugs. We are not even going to challenge the SEC with Smart recruiting the way he is and with what Mullen is about to resurrect at Florida. We might take down the other East teams, but only because they are mediocre as well.
But in the long run, is 8-4 0r 6-6 really that bad? Some teams would love to be consistently at that level. Heck, I wish WE were at that level consistently. We are not. We had the absolute worst football team in the SEC last year, and I think - instead of talking insanely about SEC titles - we need to focus on the 8-4 mark. It would be a remarkable job by a coach like Pruitt if he could achieve this. So I will be overjoyed if we are able to get this and go to a bowl like the Outback.
Some of you will slam me for saying this. That's okay. But let me ask you - do you pay for the games? Do you love filling the stadium? Because, if you do, you are the reason we are mired in mediocrity. There is no incentive to hire a top-flight coach because you're paying anyway. I don't blame the administration one single bit for settling for Pruitt. They did the smartest thing they could do. To tell you the truth, I hope they amp up ticket prices so we can renovate Neyland even more. Why? Because you're going to pay it. We all know it. You love it. You can't get enough of it.
And I am fine with it. It's still my school, for better or for worse. But please - I beg you - lay off the title talk and don't go squalling about firing Pruitt if he is going 8-4 or 7-5. Why? Because nobody better is ever going to come. As long as you scarf up season tickets, the powers that be are happy.
I'll see y'all in Neyland when the tickets are being sold for $5 apiece. I still like football, and I am looking forward to going.

Stopped reading after the 2nd paragraph. Bama is 10 yrs with Saban. Prior to that they sucked worse than our past 10 yrs and longer but people forget that. So your quote about Bama is dead wrong! Clemson has only been relevant for the past 6. Once you get the right coach with the right staff and the right support, then things turn around quickly!

We have not had that for over 10 yrs now!

You have been 10 years in the wilderness compared to Bama's downtime. Alabama has at the very least won one SEC championship every decade since the conference's existence.

And the margin of score differential between Bama and tennessee in this once grand rivalry since Nick Saban's arrival has been obscene.

“A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”

OP is right. It’s why we’re still here after all these years.

No real UT fan will accept 8-4 year in and year out. It is ok as a stepping stone to better things.

I agree the UT admin has been looking at football strictly as a business. We they hired Phillip was the first time I felt the admistration was interested in winning. Phil would rather resign than give up on winning.

Poor Butch couldn’t get any money for assistant coaches. I think this is why we could not hire a top notch coach. Phil opened the savings account for Pruitt’s staff and Pruitt has said Fulmer will provide whatever he needs.

I like Pruitt and I think he was the best we could do following the circus act. I would rather have seen us repeat what we did in basketball and hire a head
coach that had shown success for 15 years or so.

In football I feel the assistant coaches are vitally important, because the head coach is too busy to do a siginifant amount of player coaching.

How much experience did Bill Battle have?

Bama’s rough stretch was nowhere as bad as UT’s has been since the 2008 season. Do people forget Mike Shula went 10-2 one year, when was the last time UT even won 10 games in a season
