According to some info from the end of last season, here were the top assistant salaries in the SEC:

Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn – $1,309,600
Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis – $875,000
Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart – $851,500
Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham – $755,900
LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis – $708,000
South Carolina defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson – $705,180
LSU quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe – $700,000
Tennessee defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox – $625,000
Tennessee offensive coordinator Jim Chaney – $525,000
Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain – $516,000

From this list, all of them are gone this year except Smart, Grantham, Chavis & Chaney.

Now when you take off Malzahn and Weis (took other jobs), and insert Sal at 900K, he would be the top paid returning assistant. I realize that there were probably some assistants hired in making more than him, although it wouldn't be more than one or two.

So, when evaluating Sal's job performance and whether or not we should keep on paying him that big salary for a few more years, keep in mind that the ROI on him is even lower since we invested so much (way too much by far) in him up front on a promise to pay off later.

Even harder to believe that he makes that much more than Chaney at this point.

If we keep Dooley and I hope we don't, offer Todd Grantham – $1,000,000. Georgia's D has come together the last few games or maybe this is just crazy talk.

I think Sal was being paid 800,000(2.4 million for 3 years). His buyout if fired after this season is 1.84 million. We are paying top DC money for a glorified LB coach. When your trying to find a DC who is willing to work with a career losing coach, it's going to cost you.

The fact we are paying Sunseri more than we were paying Wilcox is ridiculous.

Actually we are paying what we had to given the situation. We had to pay close to the average rate in the SEC to get someone to bite. By comparison, Chavis will make 900K this year, 1.1mil next and 1.3 in 2014. Smart will get another huge raise this year if he doesn't decide to go be a HC. Assistant salaries are getting out of control and we are paying about average of what the Big Market teams in the SEC are paying.
Seems like a lot of people are looking at our coaches salaries in hindsight and making conclusions that don't take into account the situation at the time of hire. Dooley got a big buyout because we didn't want him to pull a Kiffin and wanted to commit to him for a long haul because everyone agreed at the time that we needed stability and it would take several years to rebuild. Now that we are growing impatient(not taking sides here) everyone is saying how dumb Hamilton was to give him a huge buyout. Just saying hindsight is 20/20 but at the time everyone in VolNation liked the hires and the contracts and was willing to commit to supporting them long term. If we had hired a DC on the cheap with a small buyout we would have gotten someone from a no name school and everyone would have been irate(See Dave Clawson). You can't have it both ways.

So instead we got a nobody from a big named school and paid him an arm and a leg. Should've cleaned house last year when Dooley walked.
