Hiring a DC before signing day is not going to make OR break this class. Take your time Coach, and find the guy you want.

I agree about taking his time, but i think recruits would like to know who they are gonna be playing for. Thats my reasoning for wanting someone before signing day.

The three defensive commits in the last few days tell me he either knows who its gonna be and is telling them to keep quiet, or they don't need to know this info.

I think its the former.

I agree.

I think there is no wrong decision here.

The other side would say our recruiting class won't be affected too drastically regardless of whether the coach is hired pre or post NSD.

I don't know if I like all these bama ties.. It just feels dirty..

I don't really think of Sunseri as a Bammer. He's only been there about a year. For some reason, I remember him extremely well as a Pitt player and assistant coach. He did a great job with the Panthers (Carolina, not Pitt), granted that he was working with the likes of Julius Peppers there.

That's true. What I don't know is how much bigger the pool of candidates would be after nsd. Are their candidates in college that don't want to screw their school or NFL guys not free yet? I don't know that the possibilities expand that much, but if the guy or guys they want aren't avail til then, I'd rather they wait. I can't see any potential dc that is going to pull a slew of 4 or 5 star commits.

We need to hire a DC that can pull a slew of 4 or 5 star OL commits!

Is that possible?

I'm just not feeling it with Sunseri. Maybe I just don't know enough about him. I really can't see bringing a LB coach from Alabama to be our DC when we could just promote LT. Sunseri was a DC for a year at Illinois State and a couple of years at Alabama A&M, but I'm just having a hard time seeing this as a good hire.

Kinda like stealing a 5 star from them, if he's really good, he is removed from their program, and added to ours.

He wouldn't be my first choice either, fwiw.

All I know about him is that he's an outstanding defensive line coach. I also know that he's incredibly intense, and uses a lot of colorful language.
Whether or not he's ready to run his own defense, I'm not sure.

I think that it is imperitive that we hire the right guy for the DC job. When you have talent like Alabama has the DC does not have to be the best but when you are low on talent "like we are" he had better be Dammmnnnn good! I will trust that Dooley will hire the right guy but I don't want someone hired just becuase they were awsome last year with nothing but 4 and 5 start talent. JMO

Is there any links to confirm this. I remember this guy saying we had 3 different head coaches so I am going to wait till I see something official.

Panthro and I know that this guy flat out got it done for the Carolina Panthers for a few years when he was on John Fox's defensive staff, notably with Jack Del Rio.

He would be a great hire.

I agree, and if we could bring in Smith as the DL coach, this might work.

That article implies that the DC is already known by CDD and is waiting for some reason to join the Vols.

"While Derek Dooley wants Smith on staff, the former Vol needs to get approved by the defensive coordinator to be."

Perhaps he is waiting to play a game in South Florida against a famous alumni of a college in eastern Tennessee...

I like the hiring of Chuck Smith. I want a strong defense because that is how you win tough close games. I do not want to see UT go to a 3-4 defense.I believe this would be a bad move.
