It takes 2 years to learn everything about the 3-4 D and play it well.

I expected lots of problems and giving up alot of big plays.

I didn't expect to still be this bad this late in the season.

I wonder if it's really the coaches or if it the players are just slow learners.

Lots of times football players aren't the smartest guys in the world but I still expected our D players to be playing better than what I saw against Troy by this time in the season.

I know most of the BIG scoring plays happened on a shift breakdown because when the O makes shifts our D also has to make shifts to be in the right positions and we haven't made our shifts correctly all year.

Some plays our D looks great and we make great stops but most times on shifts we get caught out of position and we pay the price for that.

We fixed our running game last offseason and our run game is much better than most people expected even against really good D teams.

If we fix our Defense this offseason as well as we fixed our Run game last offseason then next year we Win the SEC East Title and get to watch muschUmp cry like Urban did, LOL!

When it's third and forever, and you drop one safety back in coverage... That's a coaching issue. Middle school coaches know better than that.

Finally a fire Sal and not Dooley thread. Our offense is rolling. If Dooley isn't getting fired, then at minimum, Sal has to be fired. Otherwise this changes nothing going into next year. Oregon will hang 100 on us.

So you want to fire a first year DC but Dooley needs more than 3 years? Makes no sense. Not saying this is 100% the case, but you can't make chicken salad outta chicken shiat! I bet right now Sal is wishing he was back in Bama where he had talent! Ever thought that Dools may be laggin on D recruiting because he's an offensive/special teams minded coach?

Shouldnt a head coach be both O and D? Dont switch to a scheme you and your players cant handle....plain and simple...if you blame the 3-4 then STOP DOING IT....

Alabama is doing just fine without Sal. I would fire him... You could stay in a base defense the whole game and do better than what they are. He is in way over his head.

Uh, we have more talent on Defense than we had last year and with Wilcox we were 27th in total defense. This year we are like 112th. Talent is not the problem. Sal sucks.

Same guys that wanted Sal are ready to throw him under the bus after 9 games. Wish the same could be said for Fooley. I'm not saying that Sal is the greatest coach by any stretch, but our D is horrible. Fundamental tackling can be corrected. But these guys look lost, and we're running a 4-3 more than a 3-4. We have to have the slowest D I've seen in forever. Fullbacks burnin you is just sad!

This is a crazy concept..Before I know it I will see threads about Dooley needing to be fired on here.

with that logic no doubt you voted for O'Crap. Blame it on everyone but yourself. You want to bet some real money on TN. under Fooley winning the east next year? Any amount!

You made a very valid point about Oregon and everyone knows we have to make the long trip out there to play the Duck early next season.

CDD has always said that he makes his decisions based on what's best for the team for the LONG term and I actually believe that.

Knowing that it takes 2 years to get everything learned and working well on the 3-4 Defence and knowing that CDD is a nick saTan trained coach and that Bama has had the number 1 Defence for 2 years in a row now makes me wonder if next season and adding Oregon to our daunting SEC rivalries is part of why CDD wanted to get started on learning the 3-4 D this season.

THINK...Most people on here said our O line and RB's all sucked and that we'd never have a good running game until we recruited SEC type O linemen and RB's but all of them were WRONG because CDD said he would fix our Running game and he actually has our Run game MUCH better than anyone expected against top SEC and top ranked teams.

What if we actually do get our new 3-4 D fixed and working well this offseason?

If our D was only ranked in the top 25 we would already be the SEC East Champs and headed to Atlanta with only 1 loss and be ranked in the top 10.

CDD has our O looking really good most of the time and we all agree that we're scoring enough points to have Won every game except for Bama.

What if the plan of CDD was to get our D some 3-4 experience in real game situations this year so that this offseason he could focus totally on our D so we could go to Oregon and actually have a chance or to at least look very respectable against the Ducks and be ready for our top SEC rivals?

If we stopped just 3 BIG scoring plays against Fla and we Win that game.

Stop just 2 Big scoring plays against UGa and we Win that game.

Stop just 2 Big scoring plays against MSU and we Win that game.

Stop just 2 Big scoring plays against USCe and we Win that game.

As horrid as our Defense has been all year we were only 9 big scoring PLAYS away from being the SEC East Champs and ranked in the top 10 right now.

I think that just might have been the plan that CDD had all along.

I also think that when CSS said that our D would be multiple that he and CDD meant we were going to be alot like the Patriots eventually where we know the 3-4 and the 4-3 D well enough that we can switch back and forth alot and totally confuse the other teams O and become alot more like Bama with a top 10 Defense being our standard.

If we didn't start making the switch this year then WHEN do we start so our D can be highly ranked?

Our D has to get better because we can't get much worse and even as bad as we've been we were still only 9 big scoring PLAYS away from winning the SEC East.

I'd rather start rebulding our D this year than to wait until next season and see Oregon hang 100 on us so early in the season which could totally demotivate and deflate our team before we even get started.

Fix our Defense and I think we're a top 10 team next season.

I don't care if CDD stays or goes as long as my Vols start getting Wins and lots of them.

You know if the D is this bad, why didn't it show up in preseason scrimages? It is not as if the QBs were completing 80% and the backs were running for 300 yards. Something is causing this to not translate on game day.
