I would be very carefull with that statement. The only reason you have not gone down is cause Phattie went in the witness protection program...

Has to be about the silliest statement out of the hillbilly nation in years

but in all serousness, when has it ever been an issue? am i the only one that cares about tradition??:dunno:

In isolation, it probably isn't. But we're coming of conditions that left Alabama where the best we could do for a coaching staff was Mike Shula.

I think it's a great tradition. There's a picture of Stallings and Jay Barker arm in arm, big grins, with stogies in their choppers. I love it.

But I'll sacrifice a little tradition to stay out of the shadow of the valley of death. There is no tradition without the winning.

Talk about the past all you want. It is that. The past. Our program is straight. On the rise...where is yours.

Also look in the next week or so for one or maybe two recruits to commit to UA, from right under your nose.

Is this really a Bama fan talking about "living in the past"? What?

Anyway, as stated before, your program is better than it was, far from "fixed" or "on the rise". You lost to a team on your own field we just demolished. I give Bama all the credit in the world for stepping up Saturday, but your "our program" talk is a little inflated.

You shall see. I know, I don't need to see. UT is struggling, no doubt about it, but Bama is far from being the picture of consistancy and dominance you are making it seem to be.

Bama deserved better than they've been, and they may be getting there, but to say their program is "on the rise"" is a little ahead of yourself. Keep in mind, you were 10-2 just 2 seasons ago.

With all due respect, we understand perfectly.

No matter what Saban does in his tenure at Alabama, he will never execute the "cultural change" like Bruce Pearl did.

We need a change, but UT and Bama's situation aren't even close to one another. Bama went thru 4 coaches since their last NC? We have had the same one. It's not as easy to
"change the culture" when the culture on your sideline brought a NC to town.

No, the NC doesn't buy him forever and yes I am ready for a change, just making the point that changing the culture from scandals and constantly changing coaches is a little different than our situation.
Nice response. Alabama has the football tradition, no matter how bad things get we'll always have a large fan base and big support from the university. Bruce Pearl on the other hand is bringing tradition to a school that had almost forgot about basketball. Buzz Peterson was a great guy, much like Mike Shula, but neither got their main jobs done, win. Pearl and Saban demand the most out of their players and get good respones. As a Bama basketball fan, I have to say I hate seeing Tennessee's down time come to an end but I find myself pulling for Bruce Pearl.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA outlawed the school providing tobacco products to players a few years ago. The players can buy cigars and bring them into the locker room but the coaching staff is prohibited from doing it.

That might be true, but they better want to live on campus because the rest of T-town is just plain getto.

I can understand following the rules but geez, talk about stiffing a tradition.

No cigar?: One of the long-standing traditions of the Alabama-UT rivalry is that the winning team celebrates its victory by passing out cigars to coaches and players.
But Tide Coach Nick Saban said that was not allowed in the locker room after the game.
"No. It's against NCAA rules to use tobacco. I don't think anybody even thought about it. The players were so happy. I know it's a tradition here but the players never came and asked me about it and I never mentioned it to them," he said.
But there were hints that the players might have secretly gotten their hands on cigars. Asked if he had received a cigar, Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson tapped the pocket of his jacket and said: "Oh, maybe."

Alabama suspends five for violation - Nashville, Tennessee - Sunday, 10/21/07 - Tennessean.com

Go to a couple NCAA (D1,D2,D3 matters not) Baseball games and see how hard that rule is enforced. That rule is there to do one thing, "appease".

Another example of why I like Saban so much. No respect for archaic, mindless "traditions."

I disagree, that is what makes college football what it is. If we want the "No Fun League" we'll watch the NFL.

Its for liability reasons. Just like my company has a policy against using a cell phone while driving. They don't enforce it, but its on the books for the insurance company.

Although, with the new Tennessee law banning smoking in government buildings, it will be hard for the Vols to smoke 'em next year after beating Bama.

Interesting what winning a game big will do to the mindset of a fan base.

We saw it with our win over UGA, we saw it when Bama trounced UF and were officially "Back" (until the following year that is).

The previous 4 games have had Bama fans cooling expectations and wondering if Saban really was the second coming. Loss in OT, beating to FSU, late game collapse against Houston, and narrow escape against the Rebels.

Along comes a big win and it's back to the second coming! I wonder what the mood will be after the LSU and Auburn games? Wins would lead to "lead-pipe locks" for the NC next year. Big losses will lead to despair and doubt.

Should be interesting.

Let me just comment on this and you take it with a grain of salt from a "level" headed Bama fan.

I did believe and do believe that Nick Saban will bring Bama out of mediocrity. While I am happy over the recent win, I know better than to think we have arrived. I knew that at the beginning of the season. It will take several years to become a team that will compete year in and year out.

Trust me I know we have played like CRAP this year and are pretty lucky to have won the games we have. Thanks goodness we have. That being said, we have not arrived, but I do believe we have made a step in the right direction. Only time will tell and a year or two will not be enough time to tell.

I agree with this and wasn't really suggesting otherwise. Saban was the best hire and will get the Tide back in the mix.

I was more commenting on how one game can have an impact in opinion far beyond it's real impact (if that makes sense).

while i consider myself probably more of a traditionalist than Hat, i do think there is some consideration to be made that sometimes change is good.

in this case, you have one side that takes all this stuff seriously, openly talks about and tells the history of this game, the traditions, the coaches, players, venues etc.....all of which, long time fans, for the most part, hold dear, and rightfully so.

the other, a newbie to the game, has no frame of reference and doesn't go and try to obtain one. no orange jerseys, no rocky top, no cigars, no stories.

i think in the end, the Bama/TN game is what you make out of it, as a fan. and the games will dictate the lore that is associated with it, not the stories or cigars etc....

so in that respect, i think you have to take what Saban did and admire it, if for no other reason than he has now added his own personal touch to the tradition of the game, by bucking it. Plus, did anyone else notice that Bama was much looser for this game than we were? maybe his approach had something to do with that, i don't know, but it was painfully evident that this was a game that CPF and co. coached not to lose....maybe because that's how this game is viewed by them...one you can't lose.

and we know how that worked out Saturday.......

I think that most of the level headed BAMA fan knows this was a good win but doesnt mean that we are "Back". Im hoping that all Bama fans realize that this tenn defense wasnt up to the normal standards that tenn usually produces. If Im not mistaken tenn is last in the sec in most def catagories. I dont think that most Bama fans really believed we would beat tenn this badly. I thought we had a chance to win but it would take a great game with both teams scoring a lot of points.

As far as the smoking goes , Im thinking there was a lot of smoking going on in the locker room, ban or no ban.

Saban not only cut out the victory cigar, but last week during practice there was no Orange jerseys on the scout team, and there was no playing of Rocky Top whatsoever, which all have been traditions here for years. I am very impressed with Saban, and am looking forward to much continued success with the Alabama Football Program.
