There's an article on rivals saying Ryan Karl was injured in the weightroom and will be sidelined for weeks... any info??

From the article...

Ryan Karl, who started all 13 games at strong side linebacker last season for Tennessee, will miss the remainder of summer workouts after injuring his back lifting weights.

It says he'll be re-examined in a month, and they aren't sure if he'll be ready for the opener. It also Ellix Wilson or Adam-Myers White are the two likely starters if he isn't ready.

Even with the depth, that's a bad loss for us. I expect some big things from Karl.

This sucks. Now a sterngth could become a weakness...or at least not anywhere near as much a strength as we thought it would be.

As far as depth is concerned...what ever happened to Andre Mathis? I figured it would eventually be him in the middle with Mayo and McCoy on each side. Is Mathis another one of the great 05' recruits who didn't pan out?

Yeah its true, i had a summer class with him, he said he may be out 8 weeks or so, he may also have to redshirt if it doesnt heal.

While I appreciate Karl's contributions and agree that the depth is a luxury, McCoy and Mayo are the stars this year. Dorian Davis and Adam Myers-White should be progressing well enough to play when needed.

I, too, thought Karl was the liability in the LB corps.

why would he redshirt? it sounds as if he might be back the first game of the season, or at least the second

While Karl isnt an NFL type player, he puts himself in the right place at the right time and makes plays. I dont know if you've ever watched him closely or just dismissed him based on his rivals rating but he played very well last year. His biggest contribution you didnt see though is that he is the QB of the defense. He takes the calls, and makes the reads to make the defense run as best it can. Without him they are gonna have to find another guy who can master the defense. This is certainly a bigger loss than may may perceive.

because its estimated 8 weeks but backs are some of the hardest injuries to gauge on how long you'll miss. Some guys can heal fast and be back, other guys it can take much longer than expected and would limit him the whole year.

Karl seemed to give it his all on every play. I will not dispute that in the least...BUT...was it me or did he appear quite slow quite often? Although...would I rather have someone a step slow that gives it his all or a burner that takes 1 out of 3 plays off?

He is a ok player, but I remember he lost positions in some games last year, and it hurts.

Good opportunity for Donald to come in as a true freshmen and contribute at LB.
