Rutgers 2020 QB?

Sure, I'll explain my disagreement. First, as a point of reference your original post read ...

"He’s never been as good as we wanted him to be, but people are completely nuts if they think the roster gets better "when a 5th year Senior QB transfers. It’s the height of fan stupidity."

First, you said it yourself ... "He’s never been as good as we wanted him to be". There is no reason, after 3 years, to think that he can improve to the point of becoming a top level SEC QB which this team needs in order to step up to the next level. It's time to move on to another QB and we have plenty of viable possibilities (see below).

Second, JG will only be a distraction and a potential source of player dissension with pro and anti-pro JG supporters (however, I would be surprised by any player dissension). Besides, I think JG would benefit from a fresh start at another school just like Peterman did at Pittsburgh.

Third, I strongly disagree that those that disagree with your views are "nuts" or even worse "stupid".

Now, the remaining QB's and their strengths and why JG might not be needed.

Kasim Hill started 10 games at Maryland before he suffered an ACL and he was 4 star out of high school so he has some potential.

Brian Maurer showed glimpses of brilliance this year. The team seemed more motivated and moved the ball when BM was inserted into the game. Unfortunately, it seemed like every time Brian got going this year he got injured or was pulled after a bad series. The staff had Brian on a very short leash this year and had he been given more time to work through his youthfulness JG might not have been needed this year.

JT Shrout. Hmmm ... he has a great arm but I just don't know.

Jimmy Holiday might be a sleeper for the QB position. He certainly gives us a great RPO QB which seems to be the way college football is and has been heading.

And finally, Harrison Bailey. THIS. HB will be the starting QB from Day 1 next year and absent an injury he will play the entire year and beyond. Book it. He is caliber of past freshman QB's like David Greene, Jacob Eason, Jake Bentley, Jake Fromm and the best, Peyton Manning who started early.

In summary, IMO the roster isn't improved or seriously hampered by JG's presence on the team. If he leaves, however, I think he will be better appreciated somewhere else and we will have another scholarship available.

Now it's your turn. In your opinion does JG improve our roster next year and secondly, why am I and others that might agree with me nuts or stuprid?
First of all... thanks for a thoughtful reply. When I say “fan stupidity” I’m referring to the way fans tend to be black and white about everything i.e. a QB is either a future NFL 1st rounder or he’s trash. There’s no nuance to fan narratives, so because JG has been disappointing, people want him gone. Even if another guy starts, I don’t think we can do that for a few reasons:
1) There’s always room on the roster for somebody who has played as much as he has. You never know when you’re going to need QB depth.
2) I understand preferring one QB over another, but it shows a complete lack of perspective to encourage a kid to transfer who has played hard, never gotten in trouble and graduated like he was supposed to.
3) if we publicly turn on a kid his Senior year, it will be a negative recruiting point within about 5 minutes.

It’s because he plays so bad at times that everyone thinks there has to be someone who can do better than him. Then Maurer comes in and starts throwing into triple coverage and everyone is left scratching their head lol. I trust the coaches to choose who the best qb is and all, but I don’t want them to put in Guarantano over HB just because of experience. We are basically accepting mediocre qb play at that point.
Then start a thread about firing Pruitt if you think he’s not smart enough to play the right QB.

For UT, it is a no win situation either way so I don't see them commenting on this. I think they have handled it well, in terms of letting it become more private in nature. You need to stop trying to invent a conspiracy where one more than likely doesn't exist.
Not trying to create anything but thanks for playing along

Point #2 and #3 aren’t relevant. We aren’t talking about the program pulling his scholarship. We are talking about his possible decision to enter the transfer portal.

If you are entering the transfer portal during your senior year, then it is quite obvious that even you don’t believe that you’re good enough to be the starter next year.

Harrison Bailey is ALREADY BETTER. Plenty of freshmen QB's have played early and have done well in the SEC. David Greene, Jake Fromm, Jake Bently and Jacob Eason easily come to mind. Given that HB has been a starter from day 1 at Marietta (in the highest level football conference in Georgia) since he entered high school I see no reason whatsoever that he will not be Tennessee's QB on day 1.
Did you even read who I was replying to? He said "we already have better AND Bailey is better."

Because in the opinion of an overwhelming majority Pruitt did it this year.
Well the “vast majority”, which you are part of, have almost no clue about the actual nuts and bolts of football. They know what the score is and talk all day about stats they have googled but don’t really understand what’s going on.

Dude we may see, I mean a a mac team might, I am talking about p5 teams. For example what team in sec would want him?? I would like to see this??
My advice is: start drinking heavily. Take Bluto’s advice, he’s Pre-Med.

I want him back. If he goes, he will probably have the best year ever and our offense will struggle even worse and those saying good riddance will be complaining because the coaches did not try hard enough to keep him. That is what Tennessee does. Just consider that Alabama let Hurts go and Georgia let Fields go - and who was in the playoffs ... Not those two schools.

I thought Hurts and Fields were QBs. But if you’re saying they’re the reason Bama and UGA didn’t make the playoffs then they must be All American corners or defensive ends. Burrow scored at will on UGA and Bama so the only player that could have changed that would be a defensive all star.

So it appears you are one of the ones who really thinks jg is the guy. We will see who knows and who doesn't know next year. Anyone who knows anything about football can see jg throws late, overthrows his receivers, is terrible in the red zone. Maurer; even in Pruitts mind was going to be the guy when he started versus Ga. but he got hurt. He had already decided this, and when Maurer got hurt, jg played much better than he had been. So yes he had already decided Maurer was going to be the qb. So its not just my opinion it is pruitts also. Injury changed things and jg's play also improved.

Better be careful what we wish for... HB better be the real deal. And no I don't think JG is real good.

This...

Is JG a stud qb? No, but he receives way too much negativity on here. He has showed heart and toughness, and is a true Vol in my opinion. Def deserves more respect that what hes been getting.

So you’re not only a substance abuser but a mind reader and a clairvoyant.

No need to make things up.

I really hate how this kids time on the hill has played out.JG has been beet to a pulp the last 3 yrs and just kept on fighting. He has more fight and determination than probably 95 % of the players in the country. What is so puzzling about JG is that when he is rushed and dont have time to think he throws with much more consistency and a nice long ball. But when he has time to sit back and see the field he throws all over creation.Sometimes I think he just wants to succeed and be the hero so bad that it clouds his judgement.I hope whatever path he takes is a success because he put his heart and soul in the orange and we all should be pulling for him IMO

I don't believe we are all trying to push him out. But it's really hard to fathom to many of us that he will be playing much next year with the QBs we have next season. And if he doesn't have a problem with it,so be it

If there is a better option next year why would CJP play JG?

Pruitt is an old school coach that values experience over everything else at the QB position. If he was head coach at Clemson then Bryant would have started over Lawrence last year.
