Very cool. Hard to believe some kids starting college ball were born when he started playing pro ball.

This is why Russell Wilson is a winner. He truly understands what it takes to get it done. Awesome story by a classy individual.

Funny how everyone loves Russell Wilson and he's black so no mention of race. But let anyone question cam newtons antics and all of the sudden we're all racist...double standard imo

Pretty sad that some on have to bring Newton into this. It has nothing to do with him. Newton acted badly, so what. Either he will learn from it or he wont. Its actually irrelevant with this thread.

Wilson is a class act and this letter just reiterates that. I wonder how many people Peyton has actually influenced and inspired? I can only assume its been a lot. Just another reason why he is one of the greatest and a once in a generation type of player. If this is Peyon's last year, the NFL wont be the same without him.

I disagree with that statement. Newton needs to hear about it for the rest of his life. My one year old has more dignity than than arrogant Bastard. He is bad for the game and I don't care if its brought up in every VN thread from now until the end of time. So no its not sad at all. Oh wait, you must be a Carolina fan huh? If thats the case then I feel sorry for you and all the other fans out there for having to put up with that "Whine Box" as their QB. That is whats sad IMO.

I have a little tribute of my own. Forgive me for not starting a thread (don't have 100 posts).

Back circa 1996 or 97 when ESPN first came out with a college football chat room (don't think they still have one?) I was a young teen of 13 or 14. I noticed there was this guy in the chatroom who seemed uber friendly and knowledgeable about UT football. I asked who a few things about the upcoming year and he said basically "I have a feeling we are going to be good."

Being a young teen someone said something bad about UT football and I said something bright to them to the effect of "You suck." (genius I know). The guy proceeded to give me an internet cursing.

Suddenly the super nice guy I was talking to earlier comes to my defense. He tells the guy to watch his language because there are kids in the chatroom. Honestly, I kind of chuckled at this response (being 13 or 14). The other (cursing) guy responded and asked him if he was the Net Nanny.

I don't remember what happened in the chat after that other than the nice guy telling me to have a good night and the obligatory "Go Vols!". SEC Media days was a few days later and Peyton was one of the UT players to come to the mic. They were asking him something about the perception of him as a good guy and he proceeded to tell the story of how he asked a guy not to curse in an internet chatroom a few days earlier and the guy had asked him if he was the Net Nanny. "He didn't know it was me", he said while chuckling with the media members. My young mind exploded out of my head. Peyton Manning, the Peyton Manning had defended me in an internet chatroom and more importantly had been super nice to me. Helped me realize early on that just because people are celebs, they don't have to be arrogant SOB's.

This was truly a cool experience for me as a kid, and I will always take that memory with me.

Does anyone know where I can find a link to the 1996 and 1997 media days? I would love to see the interview(originally I only read the quote in a newspaper), and it would be much appreciated.

Lol @ Cam not being "respectable" to some of you guys.

I think most ppl are simply butthurt that Cam didn't give you all the "Ha! Take that!" moment after the game that you wanted after seeing him play the game his unique way all season. There is more than one way to do almost everything in life, and if a guy doesn't seem upbeat and excited about an embarrassing loss after working so hard to make it to the Super Bowl, why should he fake it?

He wasn't disrespectful, he paid respects to Peyton after the game, and he was within earshot of the other team gloating about the win during the interview. Dislike his demeanor or brashness on/off the field, but respecting him shouldn't be up for debate.

He's given me a lot to respect as a player, the kid is enormously talented.....he's given me very little to respect as a human being. Jmo.

Why don't you try this:
Newton is a Christian. Newton spoke about his faith after winning the 2011 BCS National Championship Game saying, "It’s just a God thing. I thank God every single day. I’m just His instrument and He’s using me on a consistent basis daily."[161]

Sir--

Cam is the epitome of the self-indulgent and immature spoiled brat! And it is sad to be sure, because he is one of the most gifted athletes to have ever put on a NFL uniform.

However--the humble pie served up to him in the Super Bowl actually revealed his true character. NFL QBs have been answering the hard questions for over 50 YEARS--but you'd have to exhaust your resources to have one act as classless and self-absorbed as Cam did in his post-SB interview.

He also seems to have no understanding that there have been OTHER African Americans that have exhibited excellence at the position of QB in the NFL and won their fair share of games...Guys like James Harris, Doug Williams, Russell Wilson, Steve McNair, Warren Moon, Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham, etc...etc....

Steve McNair also won the MVP award, too...and played the game in a very similar fashion to Cam....and there's no guarantee that Cam will have better career numbers than Steve did at this date.

So, when this current ego-maniac stands up and says that he's able to do things as an African American QB that no one else has ever done before--he's either just plain ignorant, stupid, or lacks a proper historical perspective or respect for those guys named above who blazed a trail so that he could have his day in the sun.

This is why I can't stand Cam Newton--and think the Panthers won't win a SB with him at QB!

Good day, sir...

Strong words for a person of obviously strong conviction.

Q: If Newton is all that bad for stiffing reporters, how do you feel about Peyton stiffing Brees and the Saints in 2010 by ducking into the locker room without so much as "good game"..??

And Peyton was 7 years older than Newton and had already been to a SB.

Gee...ruins a good rant, don't it?

Fantastic perspective. Mentioning CAM is just really showing the difference in character and exemplifying what it means to be human and a difference maker.

Why don't you try this:
Newton is a Christian. Newton spoke about his faith after winning the 2011 BCS National Championship Game saying, "It’s just a God thing. I thank God every single day. I’m just His instrument and He’s using me on a consistent basis daily."[161]

Did he he really say that? Is actions are far from someone who's faith leads thier everyday life.

Great that he's a Christian....not sure how that changes how I should react to his petulant, classless behavior. Jimmy Swaggart professed to be a Christian as well....wasn't a fan of him either.
