Runninng-up the score

There's a lot of variables that go into what might be considered running up the score. Each team and game is different. Teams with 3rd stringers that could start on half the country like Bama and Georgia would have to take knees to avoid it. In Tenn's case, not many backups are as good as Milton. The dude is going to score. What, you're never going to pass and give him valuable reps? It can also depend on if your team is getting or has got the injury bug. Why take too many risks? Just end the game already. The times I think teams are running up the score is pretty much literally last minute throwing it to the endzone, or leaving the starters into the 4th when they were up 40 points. I don't feel Tenn was trying to run up the score.

You don’t tell your 3rd team offense to go lay down. It would different if you were playing first string guys. But if they can’t stop our backups that is their problem. They practice too and deserve a chance to go perform when they can. Good grief we were playing second string D guys in the second quarter. I don’t consider backups scoring running up the score. It’s their job to stop them. I would feel the same way if it was us, I would be embarrassed to complain about a teams 3rd string scoring on me. GBO!!!!

I’m one of those who believes a significant part of the Coach’s job is to find opportunities during regular season games to develop players who are not starters. The only way to do that is pull starters when possible and get others in there in live competition. During the Akron game, one of the announcers made an excellent point that it’s not possible to accurately evaluate backup QB’s on the practice field where they are wearing red shirts and NOBODY is going to touch them. Put that same kid in a game, especially one where the Opponent is getting blown out and your young backup has to function with a bunch of embarrassed, pissed off defenders trying to take his head off. If he can move the offense… by all means let him. If he has a receiver open, SIXTY YARDS downfield… sling that puppy if he has the arm for it..!!! ( congratulations Joe..!!)

This, plus the dirty play (magnified by the poor officiating), had me hoping UT would hang every point it could on Akron. I'm all about good sportsmanship, but when you mess with the Bull...you get the horns.

CJH will never admit it, but even with the 2nd and 3rd team in, he never took his foot off the gas. And I'm glad he didn't.

We curb-stomped Akron, and they deserved every bit of it with their trashy play.

Go Vols.

Jancek got a catch
Others got their first stats as freshman.

Really important to get the underclassmen and 3rd stringers feeling productive. Big morale booster.

Plus, it was great to see T Jackson throw a few. Kids got a great arm!

The first year my daughter played AAU basketball (summer before 7th grade) her team - with all first year AAU players - played their first tournament up in Tennessee. First game those girls got beat 62-10. The other team played their bottom 5 after they jumped to a quick lead. And they played full court man to man pressure defense the entire game. After the game their coach congratulated our girls for playing hard and told them that he can’t tell his players to go easy on anyone - it teaches bad habits - and that’s why they played aggressive the entire game. He expected his 10th player to play just as had as his number 1 player.

I believe the same philosophy holds true for football.
In college football there is no such thing as running up the score in the first half - you play your starters/2 deep and try to score as much as possible while trying to shut out the other team.
It’s fair to play the first series in the second half with starters because even if they are winning 70-0, the coaches will have identified a few things and want to see the players make adjustments.
The backups must play as if the game is zero to zero and try to score/shut out the the other team.
If the coach decides to score is too much he can have the offense drive the ball down the field but down the ball rather than score.

BTW, Our girls played the same team the following year. They still lost but it was a tight game and they lost by 4 points.

While some fans are a bit queasy about running up the score on FL, we do need to send some kind of signal to the rest of the SEC that we are much better than years past. We need to strike fear into all the others who think we are going to be pushovers. It never hurts to have your opponents have some level of discomfort about playing us.

I remember no one being able to tackle the Back up Qb for LSU and the defense totally falling apart. I also remember Stallworth fumbling the ball everywhere. I remember a bunch errant passes at the end of the first half where we failed to score. Or maybe it was coach Fulmer keeping the score down, who knows...🤷🏾‍♂

If folks cry about 2nd and 3rd team guys scoring late in games as running it up they are just crybabies. I would never blame a opposing coach that had unloaded the bench and still scored. Can’t tell them guys not to go play, and this isn’t pop Warner. GBO!

When you're paying another team, you're paying them to allow your backups live fire reps.

Do we really learn anything if Milton and Jackson hand the ball off 9 times? Seeing them execute and make plays makes me way more confident in a post Hooker world.

I don't like running up the score but when you put in your subs you have to let them play. We scored after Hooker sat with the 2nd and 3rd stringers. I believe we could have scored 100 points against Ball State, we put our subs in early. Proud of our team.

The goal is to have back ups who can score points and stop the opponent even in games like Akron. We're closer than a lot of us thought.

Your 2nd and 3rd string can’t learn anything running it up the middle 3 times and punting. The next season they’ve learned nothing from playing.

There is a spread for a reason. Cover it and you look good. Don’t you look bad. We didn’t run up the score. We did what we were expected to do. Plus a few more points.

We should be trying to score on every offensive possession we have. To do anything else is wrong. We have 60 minutes to score as many points as possible. Imo if we aren't trying to break the GT record then qe are doing it wrong.
