Running the Spread

I’m not sure that Pruitt realizes this or not because he clearly knows defense much better than offense but this team is being built with “spread” players. He’s recruited nothing but gunslinger qbs. Speedy WRs and no TEs. That spells spread in football. Sorry buddy.
He spent alot of time recruiting tight ends. They went to GA and Washington

Well.... right now, as it stands, this team is built like a spread. Still don’t understand the gunslingers if he’s not intending to switch though.

Without a tightend threat there's not much else. Teams can bring a safety up without worrying about getting burned over the top with the tightend.

Is it possible we give Chaney too much credit? I remember his first stint here and criticism of him for being too pass-happy and not balanced. Just asking if its just me who recalls this?

I don’t like it. Doesn’t work any better than anything else imo.... I prefer the way we used to play in the I Fornation with pro style sets. TN had certain plays that were great and really worked well.

Im Not sure if that would help to run more of theses types of plays but we don’t look 👀 good at all running these spread shotgun plays....

I like the play action out of a direct snap but it seems like few teams really take direct snaps anymore...

Thoughts??

I’ve always liked the I because of the lead blocker but you can achieve the same effect with a good TE/HB...watched Bama run it against Georgia. Their TE lines up in the backfield just outside the tackle And goes in motion. He took the LB out of the gap just about every time they ran inside and was like an extra pulling guard on the outside runs. They also ran at least one play action where the TE does the same thing but “misses” the block and continued out in the flat for an easy reception (TB blocks the LB). It takes an athletic player who is a good blocker to play that H back role. I think we have some young guys who can grow into that role.
This year is so screwed up because of missing spring practice and summer workouts...I think after the bye week we’ll see more of the freshmen/sophomores get more playing time. Our last two classes were pretty good - they just need to get into the rotation to get experience.

Chaney needs to gear the offense to his personnel. Run the RPO with short routes. There is no reason to have our receivers running way down the field and praying that we will make a completion. This offense is not working with JG. Come out and surprise Bama with something different. Its not like we are good and efficient with the offense we've been operating.
Bama was surprised by Ole Miss mainly because the did not know what to expect. We on the other hand would surprise ourselves if we managed to be in the game at halftime. I don't think we can surprise Bama anyway at all.

I like an offense where the receivers can get open & dont rely on acrobatic catches to get a completed pass. I havent seen that in awhile.

The RPO with JG?? And before somebody says "wHaT iF sOmEbOdY eLsE pLaYs", it is obvious at this point that unless JG just starts lobbing up INTs or is injured, he will play.

We do already have RPO sets. On one RPO play Chandler tried to take a handoff while Guarantano was attempting a pass, leading to a fumble.

More than any stylistic problem we don't have any awareness of what the defense is doing. UK is jumping on every route, banking on us not providing protection for long ones, so we throw outside to the long side of the field? It's a good play if the defense has been hanging back and you want to force them to spread out to defend the field, but an awful one if the corners are jumping the short routes.

There's a huge limit to what we can do regardless of quarterbacks because of the seemingly equal chance of the LT or RT letting the DE/LB by without making contact. Maybe we can do more with max protect, actually chip the ends with the RB/TE if they're going out for a route. Max protect wasn't especially effective against Kentucky because the receivers can't get any separation and do a poor job of using their bodies to protect the ball. That isn't helped by accuracy problems on JG's part, though that's a bit exaggerated (he is the most accurate of the QBs we have).

Yea that sounds logical.. but what we r doing in not working at all! So why not run different types of plays? Quick screens? Direct snaps? Option? Triple options? Draws? Play action? Utah pass?
Jet sweeps? Fake jet sweeps? Quick slants? TE passes? TE screen?

Theses vanilla spread play are fooling nobody!
There is zero creativity or variety in our plays!!
So why not use different plays and different sets?
I think you will be pleasantly surprised by our spread offense, when they decide to put a competent quarterback into the line up. Guarantano has made every offense he’s ran look bad, even his high school one. Maybe it should’ve been a red flag that he only threw for 1200 yards his senior season against weak competition.

Would help if we had a good QB that could throw the ball every known and again.

I’ve heard through the grapevine that Salter lacks arm strength. Idk how true that is though
Maybe have it backwards. Great strength, but his hs runs very simple deep pass offense, very little middle. He has to work on mid stuff, long ball is great.

Chaney and Pittman were always a package deal. With how well Pittman is doing at Arkansas I think it’s time we start to wonder if he was the reason that pair always did well everywhere they went.
