Running Game

CHH has put plenty of O-Lineman in the NFL while coaching at the collegiate level. I think it's fairly obvious he knows exactly what he's doing. People just need to have patience, as hard as it is. Is James Stone snapping in the dirt the entire game on CHH at the end of the day? No. If our O-Lineman can't do something as fundamental and simplistic as that, we shouldn't be shocked they can't blow SEC D-Linemen off the ball.

I know it seems like I'm picking on Stone, but just watch him. He is so focused on merely snapping the ball instead of doing it as second nature that he doesn't react fast enough to block interior linemen without help nearly 8 out of every 10 snaps.

I know his track record and I believe he can get it done, I guess I just expected a little better in this game. Hopefully the line will learn from this game, there's nothing like experience to improve in the trenches.

We don't coach it with this staff, and we don't believe in it. And we don't know how to effectively create a coherent run offense.

And, now, we seem to have reverted to "my guy" in the backfield. Poole is clearly the #1 in every game situation, but the talented freshman plays the second half? It will create a bad locker room, IMHO.

I still dont know how we were able to run the ball when we had the Sullins twins starting in 09. Dont give me this crap about there only sophmores because we ran the ball better last year when they were freshmen!

Matt Simms got sacked a million times last season, so id assume they spent a lot of time drilling them to pass block and protect that it became their main concern and has effected how they play

a lack of talent ?

Pretty much. Pass blocking is intelligence and being able to hold your ground; takes some serious awareness and football IQ. Our o-line knows how to play the game.

Run blocking is nothing more than being bigger and stronger than the guys across the LOS. You can't teach it, you either are or you aren't, and our guys aren't. It's not going to get better in the middle of the season, our guys aren't going to magically be able to squat 200 more pounds or run drills 50% better than what they're doing now. We're going to struggle to stay on the field with every conference opponent left, save the typical Vandy/Kentucky games at the years end.

Definitely disappointing. As much as I like seeing Bray slinging it around, I'd love to see a great power running game.

I agree. Yesterday we turned into an Air Raid. That isn't us...we always have a balanced attack.

I hope we can kickstart the run game, if we have to abandon it, it can be bad for recruiting post Bray/Hunter when we may not have a deep attack and need a reliable ground game (ie yesterday)

I may be way off, but it looks to me like we could really benefit from long counts. I don't see bray using the hard count much, and I think we are therefore catching people or missing as they blitz, instead of exploding and driving big bodies.

Can someone who knows how to break down film effectively tell me what the problem is with our running game. It seems that we have big talented bodies at lineman, granted they are young, but they do have a few games together under their belt. Is it scheme, lack of fundamentals, or will it just take a couple of years to get that ironed out? These are serious questions, I can tell as a fan that we need to run the ball better, but don't understand what is holding us back from it.

While the line is not good at run blocking I am begining to think it is as much the running backs as the line. They have NO vision. I love Poole but he has no business starting in the SEC.

Same problem as last year. our o line can't push anybody around and open up lanes. We couldn't even push vandy around last year consistently, looks like more of the same this year

Speaking of Vandy, I don't think that is an automatic win this year. They look pretty good at 3-0.

The only run play that looked good was the first one. Poole found a hole and then got nine yards.

I believe CDD has been quoted as saying,"It's better to have a great back and an average line, than a great line and an average back" unfortunately,he has average at both at this point....o-line looking good in pass protection, has alot to do with Bray making a decision, and quickly getting rid of the ball.

As long as Jim Chaney is designing this offense and calling plays we will never be a two dimensional team. He has no desire or ability to generate a rushing offense. If you guys haven't learned this over his 2+ years here you are blind.

He has ridden Drew Brees all the way to his peter principle. Any position on a coaching staff above passing game coordinator is above his ability and skillset.

Now that Hunter is lost, pass protection would seem to be less valuable than run blocking but I wonder if there is time to refocus the OL and turn this into a run oriented team?

I think there is something we are doing that tips the defense that it's going to be a run. A signal or hand placement, foot placement or something. Florida's line is good, but I don't think they are good enough to do what they did yesterday without some trigger as to what the play is.

Even without Hunter, this is a passing team.

Floridas front 7 was playing reckless & being very disruptive. We didn't run a single screen. Our play calling only boosted their confidence. Our passing game showed how weak they were it was just too little too late.

I was thinking the same thing...Raijon Neal on a couple of screens might have slowed the blitz down at least a little bit...Just like they did to us on the first drive.

My opinion is that the pay calling is too predictable. The running play where Bartholemew shifts from the slot to the fullback position you can see from a mile away and we must have ran it four or five time yesterday. You can see the line of scrimmage overwhelmed immediately.

I just do not understand it, they have great size, we average what, 300lbs on the o-line? Pass blocking is ok, run blocking is just garbage. I know we are young up front but so was UF, we had 2 yards rushing, 2 yards rushing! That is plain unacceptable. Coach H needs to get in these guys butts and let them know whats what.

We cannot win in the SEC without some kind of a running game period.
O-line pride? Lets see it.

Dooley told you before the game that if our guys didn't block or got beat on the line we'd lose.
Why is that hard to understand?

I'm sure the running game works fantastic in our practice sessions against our defensive front - so no problem. Plus we may have been saving our running game all year as a secret weapon to use against Buffalo. You never know.

Seriously, if I was Lane or Poole I would dress down the freaking line in front of everybody in practice. I'd make it clear that we are suppose to be a damn team but I'm not going to be able to do my job if everytime we call a running play the effing hole is plugged up with your fat a-- butt. You guys s*ck royally. Justin Bieber could do a better job than you prissy etc. etc. - then when they exploded in his direction to physically attack him, he could run away saying "now that's what I'm talking about!"

I was once on a team that lost a big game because we couldn't block. The next week, we skipped the films, skipped warmups, skipped everything except for pushing the sled. We pushed that sled for 3 hours every day with the O line coach riding it and not saying a word. We all knew how to block, we just didn't execute with heart. After that week we did not lose a game for 2 years...

I feel like we have gained ground on our O line, at least in terms of talent. However, I feel like we've lost some talent at running back. I hope we can find some good young RBs in recruiting this offseason.
