Is it to late in the season to ditch the slow developing, tired, gives the defense time to clog the line of scrimmage running game? Or are we stuck with watching this painfully lathargic mess the rest of the year? After watching other teams hit the hole with athourity and run downhill and be successful why can't we do that?

Wishbone....No wait need a OL to be successful.
A fly sweep works at times with Pig.

Maybe I've missed something but I haven't seen many holes opened for a back to hit. I think the hesitation you are seeing is the back delaying half a step so that something might open up.

I have seen a few plays this year where if the back didn't hesitate and actually it he hole there was room to run. Most of our yardage is from bouncing it outside. Heck let JW pull the ball and run he could have pick up a ton of yards.

Coach Jones is obviously committed to the read-option offense. He successfully ran this style of offense at Cincinnati. The issue we have right now is the defense knows Worley is not going to pull it out and take off with it, so they can simply ignore him. I can only believe Coach Jones wants our young OL to continue to develop their read-option blocking skills so that when he gets a true read-option QB next year they will be ready. Doesn't help us much this year though.

Answer---- have a QB that's willing to run the ball. Not asking for a 100 yards just the attempt. No team we have played fears our QB treat on the ground. Makes our offensive scheme one dimensional running the ball. With one back in the backfield, all Lb's key the tailback and forget about Worley.

Agree. Here's your answer OP.

A few problems:
1. This offense probably works best with a mobil QB. He doesn't have to be the second coming of Cam Newton, just someone who can gain the respect of the defense on the option. Oh, and we have two QBs coming that fit this mold. People also forget the CBJ's offensive scheme is hard to pick up on. WRs have a very hard time mastering the routes of this offense, and the QBs in this system have to be accurate over the middle of the field consistently.
2. Our o-line sucks, not just because of youth, but also because guys are having to play new positions. Thomas is probably best suited inside at C, but we need him a RT. Kerbs has stated he is best at G, but we need him at LT. Kendrick is best suited at RT IMO, but he has been playing both T spots. Due to depth we are having to play guys in new positions, and this isn't an easy, quick fix to our o-line problems.
3. The running play calling isn't the entire problem to our running game issue. The problem is a combination of the o-line sucking it up, bad play calling in specific positions on the field, inconsistent QB play at times, WRs not creating space in 1 on 1 battles to allow for us to get huge plays down the field, and players not executing the play correctly.

Worley already takes a lot of hits as it is, without running. The staff doesn't want him keeping it. Saving the hits for pass plays.

Here our the running game options/results:

1: The "read-option"- Worley takes the snap, the defensive end immediately crashes on the RB. The RB is stuffed because Mack Crowder has been blown off the ball so it results in a loss of 2.

2. The "zone-read"- Worley takes the snap and hands it to Hurd/Lane who literally move at my 86 yr old Mimi's pace while waiting for the OL to attempt to open a hole. The RB is stuffed because Kerbyson/Jackson/Crowder have been spayed by the opposing DL.

3. The "jet-sweep"- Worley gets it and hands it to Pig. Thomas is raped and pillaged by his man which causes Pig to try to bounce it 5 yds farther back, by that point the blocks of Malone/North has been rendered useless and Pig is dropped for a 7 yd loss.

4. The "draw"- only used against Georgia when it was a 3rd and 12 situation or so. Very effective, but it appears we are content with chucking bombs downfield into double coverage.

5. The "qb keeper off read option"- Worley takes the snap and...LOL just kidding. He hands off to the RB. Maybe next year...

We tried the draw today as well man. It wasn't effective. I think we still have to keep taking shots down field to guys like North just to keep the defense honest; however, we are never going to be successful doing it until we can run the ball effectively. The deep ball is set up a lot better when you can do it through play action. We also need to incorporate the jet sweep more into our offense. Playing guys in motion causes confusion, and it also forces the defense to cover everyone on the field. FL wasn't worried about our RBs today because they knew during passing downs they couldn't go any where because they had to stay and help block for Worley. That's a recipe for disaster, and when we accouted for it by running some HB screens, the play would go for only a short gain. We really lack a small, fast, elusive RB who can get behind a big o-line and break one to the outside. Those small RBs are hard to see, and even harder to tackle.

#1 We have young, weak, inexperienced O-line. They can't get it done.
#2 The read option doesn't work because Worley cannot run. PERIOD.
#3 The hand-off to the RB on an inside run doesn't work because the O-line can't make a hole to run thru.
#4 The O-line can't keep the rush off of Worley who is a pocket passer.

BOTTOM LINE: THE PLAYERS DON'T FIT THE OFFENSE.

Yes, we ought to change to a power I formation. No, that wouldn't work because you have to have a run blocking offensive line. Let's try a wishbone. No, you still need an offensive line for that. How about a pistol formation? No, you need an offensive line and a mobile quarterback for that. What about a pro style? No, offensive line has to block for that. Just damn.
