Running game:cause for concern?

This reminds me of the talk before the Georgia game with their "great" defense. Problem with that was, they didn't play a good offense until the UT game and neither have you all.

There's a reason you have the #8 passing D. Let's delve into the Passing offense rankings of each team you've played shall we?

Miss St. - #85

Georgia - #75

Wofford - #114 in Division 1AA

Fla. Atlantic - #82

Auburn - #80

Kentucky - #24

Vandy - #99

Don't be shocked if Ainge has an easier time than you expected.

Welcome to the board by the way.

:good!: Beautiful. If youre bragging about your pass defense and the best passing team youve faced is KENTUCKY, then...

Great number hunting.

I was kind of shocked that Kentucky is #24, I didn't know that until I just looked at it.

Kentucky put up 289 yards passing on SC.

They do have Randy Sanders as QB coach you know, these numbers should not be surprising:)

3.1 ypc is not solid. It's bad.

If you think 3 yards per carry is bad, you must have been suicidal after the Florida game, which is what I would call bad.

I take your point, but at some point we may need to realize as fans that we don't have the kind of running game that's going to avg. 5 yards per carry. I'll take what we can get.

3.1 is bad, and "take what we can get" is a low level to set your bar.

Which is why I don't understand this renewed call to run the ball more often.

Lex, I think you have taken my disgust for the running game the wrong way. I know we can't run it, and should have abandoned the run in the UF game, I am just pissed that we can't run it. I agree with you, you play to your strengths.

As another sidenote: Tennessee should be able to pretty easily put up 130+ on the ground against SC's rancid run defense.

I think our O-line is just having a tough time making a push on the big boys in the SEC. LSU may be hell on our running game...

There are only 6 linemen 7 if we have 2 tight ends. Most of the game Bama was putting 8 for sure and sometimes 9 in the box, that always leaves one, or two unblocked and then to fill the gaps makes it darn near impossible to run. They only thing to do is take advantage of the outside match ups. That’s what we did and Bama was dead set on leaving it up to their corners and safeties. Now can someone else do that to us sure, but only LSU has the quality athletes like that to play us that way. Is it a concern yes but nothing to just fold the tent on the running game. We just put our athleticism up against the opponents and let it happen that’s all you can do when teams match up, and decide to crowd the line of scrimmage.

We can't control that these teams can't throw. Its not our fault. But, we did hold these teams to well under their season averages - and that's how you compare stats, my friend. I expect Ainge to complete his share underneath, but you're not going to beat us deep too often.

However, you will be able to run the ball like you were Arkansas. Since we've faced no one with a real passing attack, our D just packs the box with 7 and 8. Not this time. I expect you guys to have a little fun with us this week.

But, don't expect to stop us either. I'm telling you now, this SC offense is one of the best kept secrets in the Southeast. Very solid. You won't find the stats to support it, but you'll get to see it.

Miss. State #85
Avg. 175 vs. USC 82 (good job)

UGa #75
Avg. 189 vs. USC 189

Wofford (I-AA) #114
Avg. 76 vs. USC 67

Fla. Atlantic #82
Avg. 179 vs. USC 105 (good job)

Auburn #80
Avg. 182 vs. USC 180

Kentucky #24
Avg. 244 vs. USC 289

Vanderbilt #99
Avg. 160 vs. USC 120 (good job)

So yeah, you held the #82, #85 and #99 Passing Offenses well under their season averages. Awesome job, really.

That being said, UT's passing attack will be leaps and bounds ahead of anything you've seen so far, #8, with some extremely talented receivers. I hope USC rests on their laurels of being #8 in pass defense just like UGa did with their scoring defense. Maybe Spurrier can put on a dress afterwards.

There is no doubt that a Spurrier led offense will be good in the middle of the season. That is just they way things are. Newton will bring a dimension to the game that UT simply has not faced this year.

On the flip side, SC is going to see a defense that is beginning to gel. They have also learned how to play without Harrell. UT has to do something to take the crowd out of the game early.

That's not even in the same universe as being the point. The point has always been that you're stats as a passing defense are misleading. Whether the passing O's of your opponents suck or they don't throw much STILL SHOWS that your pass D ranking is TREMENDOUSLY MISLEADING.

Yeah, I'm usually unimpressed with the way UT handles scrambling quarterbacks. Hopefully we'll spy Syvelle with Mayo or do something else to slow him down. He had success against Auburn, so he could do the same to us.

I would expect Mayo for his speed or Marvin Mitchell because he's the MLB.

spurrier will cook up something, he always does, especially against the vols. we had better bring it all on sat in columbia or we can forget worrying about lsu. 3 games worried me preseason, cal, to get us started, scaro, and ark, we play hard against the rest. we got cal , that leaves 2 to go in my preseason anxiety... go vols crush the cocks

Like those 16 points he rattled off on us last season? If SC scores 16 this weekend, they'll lose by at least 2 TDs.

Yeah, people need to get off this idea that we always get beaten by the genius of Steve Spurrier. The thing that beat us was that we spent most of the second half in Gamecock territory, but managed 3 points.

Exactly! PREACH IT!

A lot of non-UT fans want to compare things in 2006 to things in 2005. However, we ALL know here at VN that this team isn't the same team as 2005 ... or 2004 or ... anything I've seen. Sure, we've had very successful teams in the last 10-15 years, but this team has carved out its own legend.

South Carolina isn't any better than 2005, but we're a complete 180. This game will be like many in the late 1990s for Tennessee.
