Running Back Analysis

My big concern would be are we going to have enough carries to go around? We are not going to be able to keep backs like Neal, Lane, and Smith giving them 5-8 carries a game. We only run the ball 20-30 times a game. Add in Rogers or Hunter with the end around they like to run and I think we would have issues in the "clubhouse". JMO

If we dont win ballgames than I could see that but winning cures lots of clubhouse issues. I think Dooley realizes that not every player works out so he is hedging his bets by bringing in more than just one guy to feel a need.

Cross sticks cause UT will be his only choice. Watched him at the HS level for 3yrs and he doesn't impress me at all BUT maybe he'll blossum at UT.

I'd like to see Cross at Linebacker in college. That is probably his best position. He just doesn't look like a tailback to me on the college level.

LoL..Uhm ok..He will have a great SR year and he already has other choices. He actually may not stick before its said and done.

Sounds like UT has some work to do with the RBs.

They're definitely trying to chase guys right now at RB. I think they'd like to have two in this class. Besides Kimbrow, they're after Jovon Robinson, Mathers in Murfreesboro and some out of state guys. They don't lead for any RB that I know of right now.

They're also high on Marion Grice, a JUCO running back in Texas.

I think that, truthfully, UT doesn't really care. I think they have the guy on board that they really want. I know LV said that everyone would be surprised at how high Cross is on the board. They had him down for a private workout two weeks ago, IIRC, and want to keep him locked down.

I agree they are not very concerned with RB at this time anyway. Cross brings something we don't have right now being a bigger back who can grind out yardage.

Tom Smith will be a grind it kind of back. He's got good size and will be a bruiser. Cross will be the other. The combo of backs we have is really encouraging. Really thought they may do 3 backs but Cross and 1 more would be great. Grice or RJ Robinson would be nice but a speed back would be nice.

They have plenty of bigger backs right now. Toney Williams, Tom Smith, etc... They are all brusing, grind it type backs. Neal could almost qualify as one of those too with his running style.

They need a truly elite speed back. That is what they dont have on campus.

I would take Marion Grice before any of the others..and it is not even close. Plus in taking a JuCo, it looks a little better for Green and Thornton next year. JMO

What r u calling elite speed? Because I though mid 4.3 was elite posted by Neal.

Apparently the only player known to man who has ELITE speed is Kimbrow. Apparently it has been proven somewhere that unless you can post a sub 4.3 in the 40 you can NOT make it from the line of scrimmage to the end zone without dropping dead of a heart attack. I would question all this as I have personally witnessed many a RB who ran in the 4.4-4.6 range break long TD runs. Arian Foster, Gerald Riggs, Cedric Houston, Montario Hardesty, just to name a few the past few years....all had long runs and have never ran a sub 4.3. Odd I tell you!!

Wow, get off of the Kimbrow hate Pace, it's unbecoming. Seriously.

I do not hate the kid at all. I actually have no problem if the staff took him early in the process. I just do not feel he is the game changer he is made out to be. It's just naive thinking to act as though he is the only kid on the planet who can take a pitch to the house as some like to claim. He has great in line speed...that does not equate to a 2000 yard SEC tailback. What kind of players hit that type of season?? Bigger backs who can actually play every down. No hate invloved....I just see things as they are.

He has good speed but he's no Reggie Bush type of speed player. Say what you want but we need a speed back. I remember Neal getting chased down in the Georgia game. He showed decent speed but no real explosiveness. He may have gotten faster but we'll see.

I remember seeing several people talk about how great the combo of Lewis, Henry, and Stephens was and how that group worked so well together and how great it would be to have that kind of group again. Funny thing...I don't recall any of them having 4.3 speed and oddly enough.....they did alright.

We truely don't need a speed back. We got several backs with very good speed. Its not something we have to have to be successful. Not a glaring concern. If it was we wouldn't be recruiting all these big backs and would be putting an all out push on speed backs. We are recruiting some but not like the bigger backs.

In a rivals article with Keyante Green, Green claims that the Tennessee coaches told him that we will sign 4 RB's this year and that he will be the only offer at RB next year.

2 JUCO's, 2 Sr's?

Just can't see us taking 4. Three is too many unless we're losing some and making room.

Grice
RJ Robinson
Cross
I actually like the newest offer Mahone alot as well. Not sure if we are in late...if not..that would be 4 BIG backs to abuse a defense.

I do think I read where Marcus Allen likes the idea of playing RB. Maybe the staff gets him with the full intent to move him later. He would be considered a RB in terms of numbers this year..but would be a big saftey or LB in a year or 2.

I wouldn't think so either but the kid said Dooley told him we were so who knows. I never would have thought more than 3.
