Rumors swirling about QB competition

Wes Rucker tweeted that Crompton remains the starter. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it. But I bet the leash is getting quite short.

Kiffin just went into detail about Nick in his press conference and that he will not be playing unless it's a blowout...

Can we officially put this rumor to rest now??

Why does he have to say that? If there was an open competition, I don't think Kiffin would have tried to hide it. He's always been a straight-shooter.

He's not an idiot. You back your starting QB until he's on the bench. Kiffin has to at least appear to have Crompton's back. If Kiffin hint that there's an open competition, the job has already been given to Stephens.

There is no open competition. Stephens is the backup QB barring injury or another Crompton meltdown and I highly doubt he is going to struggle against Ohio. Why is this so hard to understand when Kiffin has repeatedly stated it?

Some competitions aren't won in a week. Kiffin knows he shouldn't make some knee-jerk move. When Stephens is ready to play, he'll play.

JC will start. JC will be pulled after his first INT. Statistically, this means he'll be pulled on or before his 10th pass. I'm looking forward to seeing what CLK has been hiding from us on the bench.

Dont count on it. With the aweful OL, recievers, how could any QB do well.

See, it is everyone else.

BTW, it seemed to me Kiffin knows it now more and more that Crompton can not be counted on to NOT LOOSE the game, much less win it. :cray:

But, I do not know what goes on in practice or in the meeting rooms. I just want to WIN now and Kiffin gets paid to WIN ALOT later....so well see, GO VOLS! :clapping:

Let's face it, Crompton is not an SEC caliber QB. Kiffin obviuosly has no faith in him based on the play calling against Florida. Crompton was only allowed to throw to the backs or rollouts with one read to the flats. Whenever he has to sit in the pocket, read defenses, and throw down the field, bad things happen. UT can not compete in SEC with him at te helm. If we stick with Crompton, we will only beat Ohio, Vandy, and Memphis. We could get lucky with Kentucky, Auburn, or USC. I think Stephens should get a chance but I understand the argument against it. Kiffin chose Crompton because he worked hard in the off-season, looked good in practice, and Kiffin knew him from recruiting him at SC. Crompton has all the tools but has no confidence and can not handle the mental aspects of football. Stephens kept the competition close with a broken wrist and limited playing time. Crompton has had much more time under center durng his tenure at UT but struggled to take command of the team. I know if Stephens plays and it doesn't pan out, we have no more options. Crompton will be done if he is benched, however he played his best coming off the bench with no pressure on him to win. Recruitng also played a huge part in the decision to start Crompton because he is a senior. Kiffin can sell early playing time to incoming freshmen. I am afriad that Crompton will lose the team if he keeps playing this way. I am not sure guys like Gerald Jones believe in him anyway. What if Stephens comes in and plays really well? It could happen. I don't wish injury on anyone but I wouldn't mind Stephens getting a chance and that may be the only way Stephens gets in. Maybe we will go up big early against Ohio and Stephens will get a chance. It would be interesting to see how the team responds to him.

You're advocating the 2005 season? Both QBs looked better off the bench that season, too.
You, sir, get no points from me. I can't believe you'd think a carousel of QBs is good for this team.

You mean the ex-QB who can't run a rout to save his life? I don't have much faith in him, either.

stephens wont start because he has 3 years of eligibility left and clk wants everyone to know that whoever comes in is starting as a freshman. So i believe he will stick with crompton and stephens will never see the field his whole career at tn.

I think this may hold water. I've been thinking about this for a few days now and I think there is an outside chance of this theory:

CLK knows if he starts NS then he has a QB controversy again next spring. I think he knows he wants to put Bray in at QB from day 1 and if he puts NS now and NS finishes the season it will cause probs next spring. I know this sounds crazy because why not do it now if it helps us win, right? The only reason I think this makes a little sense is that CLK seems to be very, very methodical in what he does and I get the impression that he is a very long term planner and has thought it through and that's how he wants to do it. I'm not sure if I believe this theory or not but it you never know with CLK.

I thought Nick did ok last year given the circumstances he was thrown into. However, I fully trust the staff in what they do and whoever they play. They get a free pass with me this year as a fan. I'm willing to see how it plays out either way.

One other thing to think about that I haven't heard anybody mention is that it might also influence a guy...idk...lets just say eric berry for instance to stick around another year if he kind of feels like this season was frustrating and next year could open new possiblities. i know it's all dependent on his parents getting jobs but it very well could wind up being an x factor.

I'm willing to put money down on that. I guarantee that won't be the case.

If Kiffin stays with Crompton through the season....
I am laying 10 to one odds, Stephens will depart after the season. Yes, QB has left in his senior year, rather than hold a clip board......

Billy Jack Haskins is a former American football quarterback for the University of Kentucky from 1993 through 1996.

Haskins won the Kentucky "Mr. Football" Award as a senior at Paducah Tilghman High School and at graduation had passed for more yardage than any player in Kentucky high school history.

At Kentucky during his sophomore year Haskins beat out incumbent starter Jeff Speedy during the 1995 season, starting the final nine of Kentucky's eleven games. That year he completed 60.4% of his passes (a school record at the time) for 1,176 yards and four touchdowns. His 47 yard touchdown run against Tennessee in which he broke several tackles gave Kentucky a 31-27 lead and won multiple "Play of the Year" awards.

During the 1996 season Haskins began splitting playing time with highly regarded freshman Tim Couch.

After the 1996 season Kentucky head coach Bill Curry was fired and replaced by Hal Mumme. Mumme installed a pass-oriented offense and announced that Couch would be the starting quarterback. Haskins transferred to the University of Rhode Island to finish his playing career.
