Rumors swirling about QB competition

Is being "mildly accurate" what we would all love Crompton to do?

No that's pure conjecture. The coaches are in the best position to evaluate the players and understand the underlying dynamics of the team. I'll go with their judgement.

Oh, I completely agree with you...
I meant to suggest that I liked his defense of his own opinion....

Everybody saying that "Stephens can't be any worse, so we should start Stephens" doesn't really make a lot of sense to me.

But for a guy to say "If Crompton is 100% in practice and Stephens is 80% in practice, then give me Stephens, because I'd rather have 80% practice translate into 80% at gametime rather than 100% practice translate into 50% at gametime."

...that's how I was reading his stated opinion, and I think that makes more sense than what a lot of other folks are saying.

If Stephens winds up starting against Ohio, I suspect it's because CLK and staff have perhaps reached a similar conclusion.

I am not saying that Crompton is not the most talented QB in the stable. I am saying his nerves gets the best of him on GAMEDAY which diminish his talent. Its like being the smartest man on the planet but unable to communicate your ideas. Your only smart to yourself!!!

Maybe you can answer your own question --->

Saying we can predict the future with 100% accuracy and "knowing" that if you start Stephens you will only get 7 wins this year (while going with Crompton will give you 8), do you replace Crompton with Stephens if you know, again with 100% accuracy, that you'll only get 6 wins out of Stephens NEXT year?

What about only 7 wins NEXT year?
What about 10+ wins NEXT year? (I think that's a no-brainer, but I'll ask it anyway)

Haha I started to ask the same thing but decided against it. Honestly, I think all things equal you start NS this year and hope he continues to improve and show signs of being a serviceable QB. I understand the reasoning behind JC getting the nod; he did some good things in camp and scrimmages, but by now they have to realize his lack of composure and QB IQ. Cut your losses early and let's move on w/ NS, worst case we're starting a freshman next season.

Spot on...unless Nick Stephens is better than he was last year, but I have serious doubts about that when he can't beat out JC.

I think they are more or less the same and by switching out now, JC is done mentally and everything will rely on Stephens because we have no one behind him. This could lead to another 5 win season.
Stephens WAS better than Crompton last year. More TDs than INTs. And as was posted had 3TDs and no INTS against ALA and GA. As a Soph. In the Clawfense. Give him a shot.

How many extra wins would NS get us next yr if he got us 7 this yr?

RockyTop...
Let me alter the scenario just a little bit and maybe we can get some more opinions...

Let's assume as FACT:
Crompton gets you 8 wins this year if he's your starter. Stephens gets you only 7 wins this year if he replaces Crompton.

Should Crompton or Stephens be the starter THIS YEAR if you know that:
1. Next year, Stephens will not win the starting job
2. Next year, Stephens will be the starter and he will manage either 7 or 8 wins
3. Next year, Stephens will account for fewer than 7 wins
4. Next year, Stepehns will account for 9+ wins

He also threw 2 INTs to Wyoming and completed a whopping 48% of his passes. Let's not act like he was the second coming of Peyton.
nobody is. The point has generally been why not let the young guy out there since it can't really get any worse.

I considered the same scenario, and I'm thinking that in order to stick with Crompton, maybe the decision for CLK is coming down to:

Do we want to be bowl eligible THIS year or not?

I'm struggling to figure out what other rationale could lead to not benching Crompton and going with Stephens.

(although maybe he'll wind up doing that anyway this weekend!!!)

If porn star plays he will throw interceptions to Ohio U defenders.....

:mf_surrender:

so will ginger so why is this an issue? You're just replacing inept QB #1 with inept QB #2.

To use a former UT bball coaches quote "How can we win when our starting QB is still in HS?"

I'd be ok w/ either this year if 1, 2, or 4 happened next yr. I'd be especially pleased if #1 occurred b/c that would mean that either Bray or Lamison made a BIG push in the offseason.

That took me a second, bravo!

:hi:

I guess I would rather not throw interceptions in exchange for not completing half of our passes.

You know, our version of Craig Krenzel.

Ok, that's cool.

If I made this even more simple and said it's a "fact" that Crompton will get us to a bowl game this year and Stephens will NOT get us to a bowl game this year ...

1. Would you go with Crompton or Stephens?
2. What do you think the majority of Vol fans would pick?

Maybe this is getting to what I'm really trying to ask ---

For Vol fans:
How important is it for Kiffin to go to a bowl this year?
Is this year more important than next year? Just as important? Not as important?

For me, I don't care if we go bowling this year or not because I'm satisfied to see overall improvement with the team.

I'm absolutely ecstatic with what I've seen so far, considering what Kiffin and Co. have had to work with.

Maybe we should just take a page from GA Tech and move to the triple option for the rest of the season.....might be fun.

I guess I would rather not throw interceptions in exchange for not completing half of our passes.

With Stephens, you get neither. The only rationale I could see Kiffin using for reopening the competition is to possibly get Stephens some game experience in the system to prepare for next year.

I hope all the people who have been clamoring for Stephens to play don't boo him off the field as soon as he throws his first INT. I have a feeling that won't be the case with some.
