Rumors on Louisville Boards - Petrino discussion (merged)

"Zipper" baggage is a lot different than "NCAA" baggage. Did Petrino get a "show cause" for his escapades? They don't take scholarships away if your coach gets some on the side. They do if your coach is involved in laundering money to agents of high school kids.

What kind of baggage is it when you create a lawsuit for your school like he did at Arkansas?

Great post!

And I can take a guess about what's happened since Houston. Todd Grantham probably started having conversations with MSU midway through 2016 season and lost his focus. As a result, the defense stopped performing well. I'd imagine that Petrino had to address that, which pulled some of his attention away from the offense. And any time your defense sucks, it's hard to stay in a rhythm on offense.

Besides... the Louisville offense isn't bad. They are averaging over 38 points per game this year, so the fact that we're having a conversation about Petrino's "struggling" offense is a testament to how good of an offensive coach he truly is.

A bad year for Petrino is 38 ppg... let that sink in.

with incredible mobility--much like Dobbs. Any coach who has a QB like those two will have a good offense because they can just take off and make big gains--and do it often. You don't have a QB like that, your offense will not be nearly as good. My point is, it is not coaching genius. You think Petrino would be thriving with our QBs? We'd be better, no doubt, but we wouldn't be racing up and down the field--not by a long shot.

SO, FINALLY ["yay!"] -- If you can get Bobby 1.0 the coach, combined with Bobby 2.0 the person, you should jump at the chance. Putting up 45 points on Bama would be a lot of fun.

Not to rain on the parade, but Petrino's Arkansas teams scored 55 points on Bama in four years combined.

Have to respond to this.

People with recency bias think Petrino's rep is built on Lamar Jackson. As someone who has watched all of his QBs at Louisville, let's just say that when he is focused, Bobby Petrino is an amazing developer of offensive talent, especially quarterbacks. He took 2-star and 3-star QB recruits and developed them into excellent QBs at the college level, over and over. Taught them to read the field, to work their progressions, and to manage the game.

I would really like to see what Bobby could do with JG. I suspect Tenn fans would enjoy watching the development of a college QB that plays at a high level.

Petrino is an a$$. But a hell of a coach. I want a hell of a coach. I'm sick of nice boys who are average coaches. Well Dooley is a prick, but Butch is a good guy.

He's a good coach but he had his shot at the SEC when he was with Arkansas...No thanks. Chip Kelly, Gruden, Scott Frost or Mullen

This, Petrino has left basically every place he's been as a steaming dumpster fire.

We are Dumpster Fire U (also Buyout U), so what's the problem?

Petrino admittedly has made bad decisions off the field but those wouldn't concern me as I bake in the sun in Sec G. Having an accomplished game manager and player-developer would make for more enjoyable football Saturdays imo. :hi:

If we even considered hiring him with his skeletons the ad had better have made Kelley an insane offer and he refused.
No question in my mind kelly is the best available.

Would you people with the Wisecracks just give it a REST? I hope like hell you never make ANY mistakes in YOUR life!

Yeah but what about a half dozen mistakes or more. :)He's already pretty much blacklisted himself from most of football all by himself, he just has to thank Lamo Kiffin for being around to take some of the heat off him. He should be sending Lamo a Christmas card every year - maybe throw in a gift certificate to a casino or strip club with it.

We aren't asking for a pastor for our congregation, we need someone who can coach the game and he damn well can.

True, we need a coach who can produce winning teams, but who can do so without bringing down numerous NCAA sanctions on the football program in the process. Petrino's off-the-field activities are potential poison to any program - not worth the risk IMO. Too many other good candidates to there to consider instead.

At the same time, I hope and pray that Currie will not make the same mistake his two predecessors made and go for non-proven assistants or HCs from lower tier programs like Louisiana Tech, Capital University, or the like. If he does that he may as well go for the HC of either Mount Union, Troy, or Jacksonville State. That is basically what Mike Hamilton and Dave Hart did, and I think our players and our fans deserve better than that.

Yes Petrino has made some big mistakes but I don’t ever recall even a hint of recruiting impropriety , not really sure what grounds the NCAA would have to come down as you said.
