Rumor That UNC Will Force Vols

I understand what you're saying, I just meant the national perspective of both programs.

PSU's records

2000- 5-7
2001- 5-6
2002- 9-4
2003- 3-9
2004- 4-7

were they really perceived to be stronger than this current UNC team?

he asked and UNC didn't want to do it. What's the difference?

Didn't realize that. I think the difference is all in the perception. It's really the bad PR of "UT is running away from the UNC series" that seems to be sticking in the media. I think if he could re-frame it to look like we're moving the series instead of canceling it, it takes the appearance of fear out of it.

Really, the PR battle was lost when he said we were changing the schedule because it was too difficult. Every team moves games, but you have to find a better excuse than what he tried to sell if you want to be perceived as a top level program.

So I guess there isn't a huge difference, but I think "moving" has less negative connotations than "canceling"

This paints us as cowards for all the world to see. I hate this move.

again, ESPN nor the sports media is reporting this thing at all, and I'm pretty sure the general public has no idea that this is happening or that the teams were playing next year

also wow, in 4 years you've only made 62 posts?

Penn State University Official Athletic Site - Football

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., June 27, 2003 - The University of Central Florida and Cincinnati have replaced Alabama on Penn State's 2004 and 2005 football schedules following a request by the Crimson Tide that the upcoming two-game series with the Nittany Lions be postponed.

"Alabama officials approached us with a request to postpone the dates due to the issues they were facing with NCAA sanctions," said Tim Curley, Penn State Director of Athletics. "Because we have had an excellent relationship with them in the past and we are interested in playing them in the future, we honored their request to move the series to the later dates."

again I wasn't referring to the current state of the programs, but the overall national perspectives of the programs as a whole. you're trying to read too far into it, IMO.

Conference championships
Since joining the Big Ten Conference in 1990 and beginning play in 1993, Penn State has won three Big Ten championships:

I talked to my buddy who is a huge Texas fan. He lives in the southwest and he had not even heard, nor cared about the schedule change. I explained the situation and he said he say no issue with it, teams do it all the time. So other than Spurrier, who is talking about this outside of our fanbase today?

I hope they do reject the buyout, it will make kicking their ACC A** that much sweeter. I know were rebuilding but I have to believe there is some politics behind this buyout. Of all the things that have happened the past three years to me this takes the cake. I just think regardless of the reasoning it really makes us look soft (chicken). Did MH do this because NC wouldn't give us a home and home BK series? Put it to a player vote and I guarantee to a man they would say let's strap it up.

also, we have no such sanctions.

not really. You don't win games based on a NC won when people still rode horses to the games.

we are being investigated and lost 30 something scholarship players in the last 3 years so we are in the same boat. Come on man, teams do it all the time. We just need some actual games played so we can talk about real issues.

Again, national perception. I can't stress that enough. Would you put UNC football on the same plane as Penn State? I sure wouldn't, and its not even close.

I hope we DO play UNC...It is just shameful that UT is attempting to duck those guys anyways...I mean they are UNC...Not like they are a powerhouse or something....They are losing a bunch of their team after this season anyways....Play the damn games and draw a decent crowd to neyland.

I don't really see how UNC can do this. Just about every contract has an out, it just boils down to how much money needs to be paid to get out. If Hammy signed a contract that would allow UNC to cause a forfiet(sp) he needs to go.

Agreed. Although I have to be honest, Hamilton's ability to deal with contracts has been suspect. I still can't believe we had to pay Phil $6 million.

their teams now are better than the ones I listed for PSU. Would UT rank as a tough game for anyone right now?

Butch Davis wants this game because he knows it will be his best chance to beat Tennessee, and make his rebuilding look even better. I think we need to play the series to help recruiting the North Carolina and Virginia area. UNC will be without Willis and may receive some hurt from the NCAA. Hamilton is making a huge mistake and could hurt the Tennessee program more down the road than if we just play the game and take a loss. This game is very winnable, even if played this year.

I hope it's true because this is probably the only way that we'll play them. Hopefully, we won't forfeit...you never know what to expect these days especially from Hamilton. I don't think we'll forfeit so it makes us play the game and won't make us look like fools. If we win, we'll look good and if we lose, why didn't the buyout work?

Just play the game and it won't be an issue....but I can totally understand why we want to MOVE it...thats right, we just wanted to move the series to a later date and UNC said no....this is because they wan't to play us while we're down because they know they can't beat us once we get back to where we should be
