Rumor: C.J. Beathard to Start for Hawkeyes in TaxSlayer Bowl
Dec 11, 3:58 PM
According to Marty Tirrell of the radio show Mouth of the Midwest, C.J. Beathard will be the starting quarterback for your Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl.

CJ Beathard will start at QB for Iowa Hawkeyes in Tax Slayer Bowl #Hawkeyes Jake Rudock will also see playing time -

— Marty Tirrell (@martytirrell) December 11, 2014

Keep in mind this is just a rumor and there is no confirmation. It's worth our conversation, though.

There's some other interesting background to this story. Ferentz came out in a recent press conference and reiterated that Rudock would start the bowl game.

Since then, CJ did an interview with a Tennessee newspaper and has said that this is the first time all year it has been an open competition for who's going to start.

Many Iowa fans have wanted to give him more of a chance due to better arm strength and more chance-taking.

There has been some speculation if he would transfer if he doesn't get more playing time. He was asked about that in the interview and his answer was to the effect of, "We'll see how the bowl game goes and make a decision from there."

Rudock is very steady, but of all years, this was one where Iowa had to have plays made from the QB position and that didn't happen often enough. The running game wasn't very good and the defense wasn't up to their particular level either.

Rudock did play his best when he threw caution to the wind and just let it fly. Unfortunately, that was typically too little, too late.

What type of QBs are they, both pro-style?

Here you go (two separate previous posts)...

1. There is a huge divide in the fanbase as to who should be playing QB. On one side you have Rudock (#15) who is a cerebral kid and a great game manager with an adequate arm as long as he's not throwing into the wind. Quite accurate and somewhat mobile. Doesn't make a lot of mistakes, but has a tendancy to turtle under pressure. On the other side is Beathard (#16) is more of a gunslinger/chance taker who has a beautiful release and strong arm, but doesn't read defenses as well. Also is better in the read option game, but still isn't what I would consider a running QB. Odds are if he got the same amount of PT that Rudock has he would be entrenched as the starter by now, but Ferentz is loyal to the upperclassmen (I don't blame him) and doesn't want players looking over their shoulder.

Beathard needs to step up and win the job for Iowa to be a better team. I really like Rudock, but he often hesitates to make throws which leads to bad outcomes rather than great plays. He's gotta be better at pulling the trigger. Beathard is probably trigger happy at this point.

2. Then there's the backup QB CJ Beathard that you guys fear so very much. The guy just doesn't have enough of a grasp on the offense yet to beat out Rudock, but he has everything else including a great release, strong arm, great play-action fake as well as the ability to run the read option very well also. I really like Rudock as an individual, but Beathard could really allow our offense to take the next step forward if he could just get the mental side of the game down. I think it could happen in the off-season.

I doubt he plays in the bowl game unless things just aren't going well at all or if Rudock gets hurt. He is capable, but just hasn't been consistent enough to earn more playing time.

If CBJ has learned anything, you have to plan for both QBs, I've seen games where teams brought in a QB to change the rythem of the game, they want to win this game just as bad as UT.

Go Vols!

We really don't do anything deceptive (other than a rare flea-flicker).

Here's a cool story, bro. I went to the Bluebird in Nashville a couple weekends ago to see a friend of mine doing a songwriters night. This young kid opened the show for my friend and did a song he had written called '20-10 Tennessee' about UT hypothetically beating Bama. After he sang it he mentioned he wouldn't be pulling for UT on the 2nd because his brother plays qb for Iowa. Seemed like a good kid.All except for the not pulling for UT.

Beat hard has far more upside potential than the starter. Problem is that Ferentz number 1 priority is consistentcy and elimination of errors. He's that guy.

Like that other article, comparing big ten power to sec speed, when a coach said Iowa will take 4 yards at a time. That seems pretty true. They're like a bulldozer stuck in 1st gear. slow, plodding, unexciting, takes 15 plays to score a TD. etc.

anyone who flashes the ability to change the formula are viewed with contempt and must demonstrate a yet higher level of perfection in execution.
