Rule changes on the way for next year (Merged)

Kickoffs out of bounds coming to the 40 is something, too.

Now, if you get a hold of the face mask, you might as well get your money's worth.

I guess they are going back to the old rules with the severe penalty because it's a safety issue, but I don't really understand the point of changing the rule.

The 40 second play clock also allows a team with a lead to milk the clock a little more at the end of the game.

Me either. I alway felt there was definitely a difference between inadvertently getting a hold of a facemask and really bringing a guy down with it.

If they're getting rid of 5 yard facemask, then they shouldn't call the incidental's anymore. Penalizing someone 15 yards because a guy's pinky tugged on the facemask for 1/4 second is going to be rediculous.

I don't understand it either. I hope the'll cut down on the facemask calls and only flag the serious ones that should be flagged, but I have my doubts about that.

I suspect that will not be the case.

The fourty second play clock is a joke. They try every year to screw up a good thing. The rules were pretty good this year.

this is terrible news to me. i liked the rules just how they were. what i really want to know is, if you are a real fan, why would you complain about the game being too long? the only thing i agree with is the coach getting an extra challenge

A horse collar penalty would be fine. No need to see more broken feet/shins. I'm not really high on the other rules. It seems like there have been a lot of miserable rule changes lately. The halo rule and the way the playclock operated in 2006 were both pretty bad. On the other hand, the instant replay and overtime have worked out well. Still, I don't really see a need for adjustments.

These rule changes are unnecessary and will not help the game any IMO.

I've got to agree. I don't like the way it seems easier for teams to run out the clock at the end of games in the NFL, making last minute comebacks less likely. The longer playclock is going to make things a bit less exciting.

the horse-collar is the only one that i think is necessary of any change. i think that's the only other tackle as dangerous as taking a guy down by the face mask.

i don't care for the rest either.

I like the 40 second play clock because it brings consistency no matter how fast or slow a crew is to spot the ball. The out of bounds rule also makes sense to me.

I'd like to see em change the OT rules to start from the 35 instead of the 25. Force teams to get some kind of yardage to give their kicker a chance.

I agree but prefer 35 seconds.
