I was surprised to see the numbers in this article. I will be honest, I expected us to be 7-5 this season but after reading this I can see why we are not looking better as a team. The makeup of the team is astounding, we have very little experience and not that many 5* players. Our team is mostly 4* and 3* star players (I know stars are not everything) with little experience in the system. It is little wonder we are struggling, not many upper classmen and low numbers overall (77 scholarship players).

Not making excuses just had my orange glasses on to start the season. My new prediction is 4-8 we will beat Vandy, KY and UAB.

We had a very high percentage of busts from the 2017 class, as well. Something like half that class has been busts, underperformers, transfers, etc.

Pruitt has a better understanding of the current system than Butch, which is why he seems to evaluate players much deeper. Much easier to have a lot of busts in your class when you could recruit 32 players in a single class. With 25, you really have to be focused on quality, and you're less free to gamble on super-athletic prospects who don't have a proven track record.

2016 class had the biggest busts

I like your optimism and your grandiose visions

I keep forgetting how every other new coach always inherits teams that are loaded.

Many don’t. They know what they’re doing and go out and make the best with the roster they have. We’re too busy worrying about if it’s Year 0, do we have enough players that were recruited by the current coach and/or what skill set the players have. The excuses are ridiculous, but they do give the coach worshipers cover.....

Starters and contributors per class help explain some of our woes.
Seniors: 12 SEC guys, maybe 1 All-SEC
Jrs: 18, with about 6 I'd consider borderline and only 1 or 2 All-SEC types
So: 7 maybe 8, 1 or 2 All-SEC 2nd team
Fr: 10-12 so far with 4 future All-SEC types.

We have 40-50 SEC type players on this year's team but very few difference makers. Trey, To'o To'o, Cimaglia, Crouch, Chandler, Wright and Morris, maybe throw in Palmer, Thompson, Bituli, Jackson and Taylor and that's really the only guys we have that resemble starting tier talent in this league, 12 Players!!

Regardless of who is coach, you simply can't win football games with the player numbers we have currently. We are 15-20 good players away. Only way to overcome our numbers are to have an all-SEC type QB running things and we don't currently have one of those. Sadly we are probably 2 full recruiting classes short of being competitive.

Hiring a new coach right now not named Meyer or Stoops would destroy this roster and leave us with around 25-30 decent SEC type players and a completely new staff the next 2 years. We need to somehow hold this class together and hope like heck that HB is a difference maker at QB, only chance we've got to turn things around the next 2 years.

I’ve been following him a long time and I refuse to believe this is his final product. He’s better than 1-3. He knows more about football than most people and especially defense.

I totally agree (except I don’t “know” he can turn this around......as I haven’t seen any signs yet)

But if he can’t get this turned around even this year. I seriously think he should be fired.

If he can turn this around from the S.C. game on and win a few, at least improve......I’m down.

Seriously though, I hope your right. I want to Vols to improve.

Given his buyout and some other things I’m ok with him having 2 more years. He put himself behind the 8 ball staying at Alabama but I can’t fault someone for doing something I would do. I fully believe he’s in year 2 and he’s taking his lumps. Yes, there’s no reason to lose to GASt. They responded well against BYU but came up just short. I had hope for the Florida game but most of our coaches don’t win rd 1 against the gators it just doesent happen. I will say with complete confidence that his kids are playing at a much higher level than past classes. There’s a lot of promise and good things in those kids. Even more to be excited about given this is their first year. I believe that If not this season he will make a jump nxt season and the hounds will ease a little. I think we’ll get a win that’s unexpected, like a Gus Malzahn job saver, and the usual suspects getting us to 4-8. I do realize it’s a very tall order but I refuse to believe our luck is so bad that all these coaches with their resumes are this bad. That being said if we’re still here talking this same subject come year 5 I’m fully ok with changes. The money just needs to ease up first.

Curious what the make up of ga state and BYU is. My guess is we have way better players than them. They just make up for it with good coaching
