Roster Management - 2021

The portal will be on fire soon as the season over for a lot of schools. The free year has given a lot of kids options now that smaller programs will take advantage of.
That's possible, though the 25 limit will still restrict it to a large degree. I think a lot of kids did that originally when the portal was rolled out...and a lot of kids hit a hard reality that schools are still pretty selective with using initial counters on transfers.

Returning seniors don't count against the 85 so that will set the limit for each school.
True, but there are still those underclassmen who opted out for this year and want to come back next year. I think we may have only 1 or 2 who have or will do that.

My idea would be to boost it for 2022, then gradually decrease it over time for a smooth transition back to 85 so coaches can manage their roster with foresight and doing right by the kids. The main thing imo is to avoid sharp cliffs...that would screw a lot over.
I’m personally for increasing the limit permanently. If schools can handle it financially let them increase it to 100 (25*4). I do not know
the full scope of the reasons for the 85 limit. Maybe someone is knowledgeable about it to respond

Correct.

Not sure what your question about Gibbs or adjusting the number is. This year simply doesn't exist for anyone as far as eligibility clocks go. Whatever he would have been this year (rs jr?) he will still be next year.
Yeah I mostly wanted to know what our maximum number could be next year.

There's no way the NCAA can implement the same rules on roster size when they excuse a whole year of eligibility for all returning players. That's just my guess.

This. There will have to be a one year increased scholarship limit to accommodate the seniors that want to return, and players who opted out and/or got hurt or sick. It’s fine for schools with big budgets but it will probably hurt smaller schools financially. Aside from Trey Smith and possibly Cade Mays, UT doesn’t have any bonafide 1st rounders. This should help the roster tremendously for UT. Maybe we can close that gap between us and UGA/UF

What about Tennessee assistant coaching staff - will the NCAA let more than 4 return in 2021?
