Roger calling in on "Doc, Jeff and Heather"

It's tough to listen to but give the kid credit for not letting his short comings stop him from doing something he enjoys. I need to be more like that.

Roger used to call in a lot more. He gets easier to understand the more you hear him.

I went to school with Roger and he is what I guess you would call "special needs". Good guy though.

I would rather listen to him than the a-hole, fat guy, and the bimbo in the morning. That show is trash.

yeah im gonna go ahead and admit that he def has more guts than i do. he's really not hard to understand if you follow his sentences closely. asks decent questions too

I put all of the Roger-frustration on the call-screener. They should tell Roger (before putting him on the air) to go immediately into his point or question. They need to just have the guts to come out and tell him that there is no reason to greet and ask how every person on the show is doing. It's a radio show, not a social call.
Roger really does take up a solid two-three minutes of time with arbitrary questions and fumbling through his every thought.
It really isn't Roger's fault for being tough to listen to on the radio. It's the producer's fault for not coaching him through how to get in and get out quickly.

You evidently don't listen to that show much. There are a few callers who take up most of the show's time.

Taking up most of the air time isn't that hard when there is only about 15 minutes of actual sports talk, and 45 min of advertisements.

I do listen to the show enough to know how poorly it's run. Sure, there are annoying callers and one of the show's hosts is unlistenable, but the producer's lack of coaching for Roger is ridiculous. If you try to compare an annoying caller to a Roger call, then you are kidding yourself.
BTW, I was a full-time on air radio guy in this town (on a station with a lot more listeners) for about five years. So I feel like I at least know a little bit about what I'm talking about.

shame on everyone who tunes in to Doc, Jethro, and poison ivy. i do hear roger call in some other shows and his questions and comments are just as well thought out as half the other callers.

Good morning,
I never post anything on this site or any for that matter. I just like keeping up with the pulse of Vol country by reading the comments, etc. I wanted to respond to this one because I've know Roger for about 13 years now. I met him when I was at UT through the big brothers/big sisters program. He was 11 at the time. A very special young man who loves everything about UT athletics and does so unconditionally. I like many other on this site sometimes get very negative about my school because I wear my heart on my sleeves when it comes to Vol sports. Roger always makes me feel better because it is nice to talk to someone who loves the Vols for what they are.. faults and all. He still calls me weekly and has done so since I moved from Knoxville in 1998. Every time we talk about whichever sport is in season. He is much like a child in that he doesn't care what the score of the last game was, or who our coach is, or how we've underachieved.... he just loves the students wearing orange and cheers every game like its a title game. Very refreshing.

That's awesome. Thanks for posting.
I don't think the character of Roger has ever been called into question. He's a passionate dude (who I even know shares a birthday with me...because he talks about it ever Oct.13th) and yeah, his optimism is always a little refreshing. I interpretted this thread to be more about how poorly that morning show is executed. The way a talk show puts it's callers on the air, especially an everyday caller, directly reflects their competence.
I hope nobody has misread my posts to believe that I'm saying anything negative about Roger. I simply think it's the show's fault for not identifying that he could possibly be a tune-out factor, and then helping to coach him along with what to do with his time on the air.

I would rather listen to Roger recite the entire Constitution of the USA than hear Doc whine, Jeff giggle, or Heather scratch up the previous night's vodka tonic.

Panthro,
No I didn't see this as an attack thread on Roger. I just thought I'd share a little insight on the guy. And oh yeah, believe me... Oct. 13th.. is permenantly in my head. He doesn't let me forget that.

Oh yea? What about Jeff talking about buying Sherry something from the Terry jewelry place, or his and Sherry's Power-T pool, or him and Sherry taking hormone replacement, or his and Sherry's plans for St. Patrick's Day...

That's some damn fine radio.

I would prefer taking Mike Tyson's best punch in his prime than listen to that clown...

Thanks for posting about Roger. Sounds like an excellent Vol fan. I commend him for having the balls to call in on the radio. There are countless people who give the "heres my question...ill hang up and listen" because they are too nervous to talk on the air. You should get Roger to post on here.
