Rodney Garner thread (merged)

CLK has been extremely impressive and I have faith in him. The Garner situation is different in that CLK has no previous ties to him. Was the interview asked for by Garner or did CLK initiate the face to face?

That's true that he and Kiffin really had no relationship that I know of, but Kiffin is a salesman. He could sell ice to eskimos.

I'm pretty certain that Garner initiated it. Could be wrong. I mean there's definitely a possibility that Garner just wants to use this as leverage for a higher salary at UGA. But, he picked a school with DEEP pockets to use as leverage. If we want him bad enough, we get him ... and I would guess for around $500-525k.

Hey, either we get another top notch recruiter on board or we cause Georgia to scramble around and write a big check...perhaps affecting other coaches pay rates as well.

Sounds like a win/win to me.

I don't want to sound too optimistic, but did we think we would make any offer and expect UGA to get out of the way. We obviously knew they would counter, thus the trip today.
He may stay, but if Lane wants him Georgia better get ready to double his salary plus.

I just would like to know what the deal with the plane was today. I wonder if Lane or Hamilton went down there and are staying the night. Still doesn't explain why the plane came back to Knoxville. It just seems odd that it would've been simply to get a contract in Garner's hands. But, if that's true, talk about express delivery.

So does UT counter with an offer that contains a non-disclosure agreement as to amount of the offer?

Doesn't really add anything to your OP, but heres a post off of the Dawgtalk forums.

"That aside ... it's over. Tennessee now owns the SEC east. I've watched Kiffin for over a decade now. The man is brilliant. He takes mediocre talent in Tampa and turns it into a top NFL defense year after year. If TN can recruit equal talent then I fully expect them to completely dominate any and all opponents. Monte is just that good."

I love watching them sweat. Go Vols.

As to your post, I think Garner might have been playing us. maybe, maybe not. Who knows.

I'm not sure Garner would take that. Why not milk this ordeal for all its worth and let it become a bidding war?

Says who?

I think it's well known that UT's recruiting budget is one of the top if not tops in the nation. I would assume that UT's budget for getting the right coaches is sky high. I'm not saying that Hamilton gave Kiffin a blank checkbook, but Hamilton knows Garner and his reputation. If we can get him within reason, then we'll get him. I still just find it crazy that UGA would be willing to give a "double the salary" pay increase. But maybe so ... what do I know?

How much would they paid to keep UT out of GA?:)

Whatever happens I think UT has set a new precedent in assistant coaches pay. Like Saban broke the bank for HC's, the new formula may become the way UT is doing it now.
