I like the idea of Rodney Garner as DL; however, is this putting the cart before the horse? I like the DC having the ability to make his own hires - or at least have heavy influence in those hires. Has CJH has already found his DC and is waiting to announce for unknown reasons? I would certainly hope so.

I am sure he wants to give his DC as much free reign on hiring as he can, but it is possible that he has deemed that hiring Garner and requiring the new guy to keep him is in the best interest of the team. I am sure he sought guidance from his AD who possibly in turn did the same thing with his Dad who has been in the business for quite a while. I would further guess he HOPES that the DC will want to keep Steele but would not RENAME him since he is already under contract and can totally be new guys call. Nothing wrong with hoping to save nearly a mil. .

Been hoping for this hire.A good man,great d-line coach and a top flight recruiter.If you have any questions about his ability to get and coach up d-linemen,look at who he has coached at Auburn and Tennessee and dawgville.

It’s official and a done deal one of 3 good hires so far Mack, Burns, and Garner solid reputation guys who are respected in the coaching world with the latter 2 being more established.

Garner being hired surprises me, but I'm more surprised that any defensive position coach would be hired before the DC.

Garner was always rumored to be Auburn's man with the cash.
exHCJP was always rumored as bama's paymaster.
Most schools have someone who oversees payroll.
Always pay cash.
Always meet one on one in secret.
Always have plausible deniability for the head coach and AD.
Deny any accusations by some rat bastard to the Chancellor.
Destroy the life and credibility of any rat bastard accuser.
And as always...Wining covers a multitude of sins.
If you cheat big you have to win big.

Winning does solve everything. Getting caught, as we just did, REVEALS everything.

Hiring known cheaters (Freeze) or known bag men (Garner) when you've just been caught is....... uh......just asking the NCAA to reach back and take a good hard swing at your gonads.
