"Meachem's last hurrah?

By Randy Moore

Date: Apr 26, 2006

Tennessee’s Robert Meachem has two years of collegiate eligibility left but one national writer thinks he’s too good to use both of them. In fact, the writer suggests Meachem will be a top-10 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft."

I don't know about you all, but I hope Meachem (no matter how good of a junior season he has) will stick around. He has the potential to break out and be considered one of the greatest WR to come out of Tennessee.

I think he has a LONG way to be considered a top 10 pick or one of the greatest at Tennessee. Right now he is much closer to being one of the most overrated. I hope he does have a break out year though.

He'd have to have one heck of a season this year to be considered a top 10 pick next year.

Yeah, that's what I think too... but I guess the writer of the article just has a lot of faith in Meachem. I sure hope he can do what he did in the spring game every game of the season. I guess all I'm saying is he has the potential... he's fast (4.4 before injury, I don't know now), big (6'3, 210), but he does need to make the BIG PLAY more often... not just against Kentucky in the last game of the season that doesn't mean jack.

He has great potential, I agree. We'll see how Ainge and Meachem work together this season. If their timing is down, they could do some damage.

Meach would need a Biletnikoff Trophy and a 4.3 to be a top-10 pick a year from now.

He's done nothing in his career so far to warrant being drafted. With his reputation for dropping passes, IMO he would go undrafted.

Great. That is all we need is more overhyped press for our WR crew. It did us a world of good last season. Let him prove his game on the field. He hasn't shown in a game the proof that he should start.

i agree with freak. he has a longgggggg way to go before he is a 1st round pick. he has dropped mny passes and has not really been a big play guy.

I dont care what he does this year. If he leaves early, he will end up like Tony McDaniel and Rob Smith. Mark my words... Guys that leave early without the "exceptional" talent are doomed for disappointment.

As Kirk Herbstreit said last year, Meachem wins the award for looking good in his uniform. That's about it, right now.

He has the look, and seemingly the potential, but nothing more at this point.

Let us all hope this writer is correct.

If Meachem is a top 10 pick in next April's draft, that means a number of good things have transpired on The Hill.

1. Someone stepped up and rememberd how to connect with a WR. A quarterback has come into his own.

2. Other receivers have learned how to run their routes, prohititing double teams on Meachem which leaves him open to make the catches needed to get the eyes of NFL scouts.

3. We've won a bunch of ball games.

I promise you this, if NFL scouts were looking for a top 10 pick in our receiving corps this past year, they'd be whistling Dixie.

yep, nothing would make me happier than to see some of the guys on offense step it up and get their names mentioned as future 1st rounders or 1st day picks even....

but right now, it's all potential, and based on staying healthy....so good luck and good health this season....

You beat me to it.

Top 10 draft pick? Aren't we getting just a little bit ahead of ourselves? I'd be happy with less than 5 drops and more than 5 TDs for the year. Lets accomplish that first.

that could be said for the entire WR corp, not just Meechem....and yes, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

One spring game does not make a superstar. SHOW ME.

My guess is that Randy Moore is either a Gator or Bammer fan. All we need right now is some idiot blowing smoke up our players' tails. I haven't seen anything from our receiving corps worthy of even the arena league.

I doubt Meachem will ever get to top 10 pick level. He has all the physical tools and shows signs of greatness against terrible teams. But he just lacks something because he doesnt fully sell out for catches and disappears in big games. A guy supposedly being hyped like this should be demandeing to get the ball in key situations. Here is an ideal situation for meachem though.

-With the wr rotation being cut in half and if ainge gets his stuff together both smith and meahem could catch 50 balls next year.
-Smith becomes a 2nd-3rd rounder and meachem stays.
-Meachem then breaks out for his senior season and grabs close to 70 balls and becomes a possible first rounder

I beg to differ. Meachem came up big his freshman year and made some outrageous catches. I think what Robert lacks is motivation. I was there at the 04 SEC Championship game and the 50 yard catch that he made over the shoulder was a thing of beauty. Believe the hype.
