Its possible but not likely. If you read the whole article one guy was even excited about Bowling greens hiring of Clawson. I would say Bowling green will be much easier than UT but I am not sure I would say its an exciting or impressive hire.
I doubt these kids are that worried about what rivals has to say about the coaches anyhow.
Good point, but, good publicity does't hurt. I think Clawson is better than was shown. I am sure Fulmer never made the players commit to fitting Clawson's system. Fulmer slit his own throat!
I'm really not understanding how the national media is downplaying the Kiffin hire as being a huge gamble. Lane is a great recruiter and was the OC during USCs most successful period and had great stats. Monte is possibly the best DC in NFL history and Coach O is one of the best recruiters in college and a great DL coach. Throw in Reaves who is a top 25 recruiter, Cheney who was a successful OC and recruiter and keep Drayton who is a top 25 recruiter. We also are looking to land a couple of other good position coaches and possibly Eddie Gran. WTF would it take to impress people? If I had known in November that this is the staff Kiffin would assemble then I would have been foaming at the mouth to get him and would have been heartbroken if we didn't. To me, this hire is so far beyond any other offseason hire that there should be no comparison.
They just play both sides of the fence. A few of them stick their foot in their mouths, but the better ones tend to avoid doing that.Personally... I don't think any of the national media want to go on record saying it's a great hire and then eat crow if it doesn't work out. They are calling it a gamble, not a bad hire. That way they can come back at the end of the season when TN is kicking butt and taking names that they didn't say it was a bad hire!
The simple truth is, nobody knows how Lane'll do. We just don't.
When you follow the Vols so closely as we do, you see things to make you feel good or get a little excited... But calling this a gamble is about as accurate as it can be put.
Let's pretend that you don't know who the HC is but this is how he was described to you.
*Young, disciple of Pete Caroll who was credited with being a great recruiter and OC in his tenure.
*Has NFL experience(We all agree wins/losses in NFL don't translate to college.)
*Hired Monte Kiffin as DC, Ed Orgeron as DL/Assoc HC
*Hired David Reaves from SC and Jim Cheney from St. Louis
*Hired one of the best S&C coaches in the business in Mark Smith
*Is set to either retain Drayton or hire Gran, possibly both.
How many HCs would you gamble against being successful with that kind of staff? Just being able to line up that kind of talent on one staff shows something special. Does anybody really think all of these guys would line up to coach with a "daddys boy silver spoon fed hack" that the media portrays him to be?
That last part, I think you're overdramatizing a bit..
The rest, as I said, there is plenty to point at and feel good about. For me though, it's still a calculated risk. A gamble. Media, and many general fans, jump to the lure of a more tangible resume(ala Brian Kelly). It's solid logic applied to need. It's reasonable thinking.
I'm giving Hamilton a lot of credit for this move. I think it pays off, and faster than many believe. Fact remains though. We don't know... It is in fact, a gamble. A risk taken by an A-list program.
Steve Megargee's answer:
I wasn't particularly thrilled with any of the hires. Most of the schools with openings seemed more interested in hiring promising young assistants with reputations as sold recruiters rather than going after proven head coaches. The notable exception was Auburn, though it's tough to call Gene Chizik a "proven" head coach when he had such a dismal record at Iowa State. If Texas Tech's Mike Leach truly was available, I have a tough time understanding why Washington, Tennessee or Auburn didn't make a serious push for him. Auburn's decision to select Chizik was one of the more mystifying moves by a major college program that I've seen in recent memory. Since I was disappointed with the moves made by teams from the big-time programs, it's no surprise I'm going outside the "Big Six" conferences to find my favorite coaching hire of the offseason. Wyoming hasn't enjoyed a winning season since 2004 despite traditionally fielding a solid defense. The problem has been offense. Wyoming scored the fewest points in the nation this season and managed more than 21 points in a game just once. Former Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen should help the Cowboys correct that problem. Christensen, a 2007 finalist for the Frank Broyles Award that goes to the nation's top assistant, helped Missouri rank in the top 10 in scoring each of the past two seasons. His offenses at Missouri generally were more explosive than the USC offenses coordinated by Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, who landed head-coaching jobs at Washington and Tennessee, respectively. If Christensen can build a respectable offense while helping Wyoming remain solid on defense, the Cowboys could be back in bowl contention as soon as next season.

Clawson had a brutal season as Tennessee's offensive coordinator, but it's hard to have success on offense when your quarterbacks aren't that talented.
