If you look at TN coaches track record - making a big philisophical change while on hot seat hasn't worked out at all.

Fulmer - Clawson 1&done
Dooley - Sunseri 1&done

If you're Jones, here is what your looking at in review

1. You just set offensive records in your offense but lost your leader
2. Your greatest weaknesses this year were discipline and injuries.
3. Your greatest strengths was your QB whom you're losing

So how do you address each?

1. Don't rock offensive strategy. Numbers don't lie. However you need better situational play calling. Numbers may have been good but offense was inconsistent at times.

2. Injuries and discipline are often the foundations of a S&C program. The S&C coach spends more time with players than any other coach. S&C is bedrock of team identity.

3. Need to develop QB to replace Dobbs. You don't have the luxury of time right now.

All of this taken into account, I can see why Jones isn't taking a huge risk in resetting offensive structure.

That said, offensive line is #4 risk and needs addressed. We have not had good offensive line play (both run and pass) since Fulmer. Would love to see an upgrade here.

What is the average tenure of OCs and DCs? Did Fulmer only have 3 OCs and one DC. Majors might have had about 15 in the same length of service. Butch has had what, 4 in 4 years and will have 5 in 5. I doubt that Neyland even had coordinators.

I would have done everything to keep Debord and hired a top tier QB coach unless he has the holy grail of OC coming in.

Thanks for telling everyone things we were all well aware of.

Debord had decided to retire so he could spend time with the grandkids. Since they live in Indiana, he took that job with the Hoosiers. Point being he was not going to be here next year anyway.

It's the typical VN thought process that the answer lies...out there somewhere. Hire a new OC, DC, QB coach, the upcoming recruiting class...anything to divert from the actual answer.

1. Butch officially got off hot seat when we beat Nebraska
2. DeBord left on his own, not a fire/hire situation.
3. He's using the Strength coach as the reason why the Oline has struggled. So I doubt we will fire Mahoney.
4. The QB situation is new. Our RB situation will be new. Our WR situation will be new with Malone out as well. Our offense players just don't have enough reps right now. It's basically wide open for starting spots.

There's absolutely no real risk involved with Butch with hiring someone outside the current staff. If anything, the timing is now since we might have a RS freshman start.

Disagree with #1.

Butch Jones will be under scrutiny. Another year of pleateau'd performance and he has no guarantee of being back. Have you seen Butchs play calling when he has a small lead? He will be even safer when it comes to his own career.

He has to mitigate known unknowns. Specifically, the egos and personalities and agendas and expectations of

His new boss.
His boss' boss.
His boss' boss' boss.

There is little to no guarantee that he will be back here. His job is to make their job easier. Winning does that.

his status on the hot seat is up in the air. it could go either way in a game or two. so it's not like "everything's fine" as he's said before. the pressure will be real in 2017.

agree about Deboard. it just is what it is.

agree also about the O line, it'll be interesting to see what, if any, impact the s&c program has on them this fall. specifically with Drew Richmond. it's time he becomes a difference maker.

as for the WR's, yes and no. yes, losing Malone's production is going to be hard. but you bring back Jennings and Byrd, both of whom look like they will be able to step up. you get Josh Smith back as well. there's talent with Calloway. so i'm not as full of dread with the WR's.

the QB, that's a biggie. i think QD and JG are plenty talented, but RS freshmen and traditional backups don't always fare well in year one. even Tee Martin, while good, really relied on a great running game and a defense. aside from the USCe game in 98, he wasn't asked to do a whole lot.

all that to say, i've gotten to the point with this OC hire business that there's not a lot he could do totally wrong. i'm not gonna get excited if he promotes Larry or Zack, but it's probably not the end of the world either.

lastly, i think though, if he sticks to what he says, he's going to have to address the QB coach issue. promote an OC, fine, but go get a QB guru. and a DB coach.
