The Columbus Dispatch: John Glenn, American hero, aviation icon and former U.S. senator, dies at 95 | The Columbus Dispatch
Personal story:
The article references his 1984 presidential bid. I can recall sitting on the floor at our house in Chattanooga at about three years old, watching John Glenn blast off from Cape Canaveral.
It was late 1983 or early 1984 and I'd heard on the news that John Glenn had opened a campaign HQ in Washington. By this time I was an experienced political "gunslinger" and decided to see if I could help my childhood hero become President. I looked up the phone number for his DC campaign office and gave them a ring. The conversation went like this:
"Hello, thank you for calling the John Glenn for President headquarters. My name is Linda (last name), how may I help you?
I told her my basic story and she was excited.
Linda: "Oh, WOW! We've been hoping to find someone with experience in the South! You sound like just the guy for the job! Now, I'm not really the person you need to talk to. I'm going to give your info to Jack (not real name) who'll call you tomorrow! Welcome aboard!"
"Jack" did indeed call the next day and after telling him my story reacted much the same way as Linda. He closed with, "You know, I'm not really the guy you need to speak with. I'll give your number to "Don" and he'll be calling you."
"Don" called back and we went through the same things and he was even more excited, "OK! Cool! But I'm not really who you need to go through. You need to be talking to Linda D.!"
I thanked him for his time and was not surprised in the least when Glenn folded his campaign a few weeks later.
Godspeed, John Glenn.
