Former Vol Basketball star, Dyron Nix has died at the age of 46 . Per WATE

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Former Tennessee basketball player Dyron Nix has passed away in Atlanta at the age of 46.

Former Vol and Nix teammate Clarence Swearengen confirmed the death through a member of the Nix family.

Swearengen said Nix had gone to an Atlanta hospital complaining of breathing difficulty and died a short time later.

Nix was a standout player on the Tennessee basketball team from 1985-89. He became a fan favorite for his athletic style of play-- and was drafted by the NBA's Charlotte Hornets.

Former teammate Mark Griffin also confirmed the news of Nix' death after speaking with family members.

"He compared very favorably to Dominique Wilkins with his unbelievable athletic ability,' said Griffin.

"As someone of faced him in practice every day, I can assure you he took great pleasure in taking it to his teammates. He was very competitive."

Nix was traded on draft day in 1989 to the Indiana Pacers. He played for one season with Indiana before embarking on a lengthy professional career in Europe.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

I can still quote John ward with this line:

"Coming out of there with it Lockhart, Lockhart to Jenkins, jenkins racing past the line, beautiful feed Nix, two hand dunk bottom"

One of my favorite childhood memories!!

my first UT bball game was when Nix was playing. I remember seeing him soar. I have been a long suffering UT bball fan ever since that night
