Riley Ferguson appears to be gone

Sometimes when you try to use reverse psychology it backfires........maybe they told Riley that he was not trying hard enough and that was the last straw for him? I wish him the best!!!! Homesick has nothing to do with it...the kid was a baller!!!!

If that's all it took to "backfire" and make him leave the program then he wasn't the right guy to be QB at UT. All you can do as a coach is to push a kid to help him improve, get the potential out of him. If he shrinks from the criticism then he wasn't the right fit and UTs best he move on.

I don't see this as negative. I see Dobbs and Worley training at a specialized QB camp over the summer with an elite QB guru. Whatever reason Ferguson didn't go, I'm not here to judge, and I wish him all the luck in the world. If you ask me it seems as if he didn't think he would start and is just doing what is best for him, and it's not our place to be upset. As a bonus, high profile recruits now probably see less competition to have access to starting with our WR core.

But Riley has to look out for himself. He did all he could to show he loved the Vols. Snubbed Saban, walked on, and competed well. He deserved more than what he got.

Huh?!? What did he do to deserve more? He deserved the opportunity to compete for the starting QB position. He got that. He deserved no more than that opporunity.

OK. OK. OK. Maybe this will make you feel better:

There was orange blood on the field and orange blood all around
And a great big puddle of orange blood pooling on the ground

A Vol lay in it all covered with grisly and horrible gore
He will never will throw another pass for us no more

Oh, pity the Vol, all orange bloody instead of red
For competition hit him hard and bashed in his head

There was orange blood on the field and orange blood all around
And a great big puddle of orange blood pooling on the ground

Basilio listener's input (SIAP)

Tony...was told two days ago of the possible Riley Ferguson transfer via his grandfather who lives here in the Tri-Cities area - Blountville, TN. Riley has been influenced by a former Matthews High School teammate - Uriah Lemay - a former four-star WR recruit who just two weeks ago announced his transfer from Georgia. Lemay's announcement came on the heels of a March arrests along with three Bulldog teammates for theft by deception. I'm being told that Lemay and Ferguson have contrived a plan to reunite at the University of Charlotte. It's also interesting to note that Lemay's older brother Christian, also announced his transfer from Georgia after last season and in January indicated he would enroll at Jacksonville State. Christian Lemay was the starting QB at Matthews ahead of Ferguson until Lemay got into trouble and Ferguson took over in his sophomore season. The Ferguson family wanted to meet with Coach Butch Jones before a final decision was made, but it sounds as if Riley is determined in his decision and if a meeting occurs, it will only be for the Ferguson family to ask for a release, which Jones has already told them he will not grant. Ferguson's grandfather and the rest of the family are not in agreement with the decision and the grandfather said he was 'going to Knoxville to kick Riley's ass.'

...and forgot to add...Riley's brother Zach is WR at Charlotte. You probably knew all this but I'd sat on it for two days and was about to bust. Keep up the good work...lots of listeners and growing in the Tri-Cities.

It would be interesting to know how much access Ainge really has. I am not sure what exactly the player group he was referring to but that was the strongest point in the whole argument. If 3 QB's were trusted to lead by their teammates while one wasn't... there are some trust issues.

It also makes sense that he might have been relying on raw ability too much considering reports that Jones specifically challenged his preparation and decision-making in the Spring Game.

Hubbs on 104.5 in Nashville ....

RF went home for mini term, called Butch and said he wasn't coming back

Wasn't situation where he was run off

Thinks he'll end up at Charlotte, close to home so he can play with his brother

Didn't want to do the things, regarding work and development, that it takes to play QB at UT. Didn't want to make commitment the other QBs were making

Most talented QB on the roster. Runs as well as Dobbs, throws it better than anybody else.

Concerned about 2015.... changes QB priority in recruiting.... will only have Dobbs and Peterman going into next year

Peterman was a non factor in Spring this year.

2015 QB situation will be Dobbs and a true freshman.

I'm blindly loyal to our players. Perhaps because of that, I never expected Lucas McCain to be a quitter.

Yeah that's illegal. Like really, really illegal. Not just for SAs, for any college students period. My old man pays my tuition, but he can't even get a whiff of my academic status unless I grant the school permission to let him.

Its against the university's privacy policy; its not illegal. Its really, really not illegal. Its less illegal than speeding.

This is great, in my opinion. It means the pressure is on the staff to lock down an elite QB for 2015 and we might actually end up with a 3-4 year starter just as Alabama, UGA, and South Carolina have had for the past 8 years. This is our chance.

Well, I gave it a 'like' beause that was pretty good actually. And not to nit pick, but...

...technically he never threw a meaningful pass for us. So hard for me to lament too much over what others could only hope he might become.

Well this sucks because I had high hopes from him in the future. I think it's Worleys job now. Hopefully he can deliver

As far as I know nobody who watches practice has walked out of there thinking that Dobbs was even ahead, much less that the competition between them is already over. The fact that all the writers who cover the team are apparently shocked that Ferguson is walking away seems pretty telling.

Not all of them. I was there quite a bit and it wasn't that much of a difference. Dobbs has a lot of talent, maybe more long term to being a successful quarterback in FBS as he has the maturity as well as the athletic talent to start after Worley is out of eligibility.

I wasn't shocked because Riley's attitude was becoming a distraction. Watch the interaction the QBs have had with the media. Dobbs, Worley, and Peterman see themselves as a unit. Riley always saw himself as an individual.

Case in point: look at the difference in the demeanor between Riley and Nathan Peterman at the end of spring. Peterman's praise of Worley and Dobbs was very apparent in every single interview he gave.

Riley, on the other hand, wouldn't even congratulate Dobbs on winning the QB competition drill that was done for the fans at the scrimmage and had a real sarcastic response. The other guy were/are team guys first. Fergy was about Fergy.

I love all of the "well I guess it's Worleys job now" claims.

It's been Worleys job. How was that not obvious?!?

Sounds like he couldn't deal with the competition--or didn't want to, or thought he was too good for competition.

As for it being "obvious" that it is Worley's job: Why would that be obvious? Worley has moxie but he's not all that talented. Dobbs is more talented and will be a very good QB for this program--mark it. We were going to lose one of the three underclassmen.

If Charlotte is still considered FCS (1AA), then he can transfer without having to sit out a year. Charlotte is intending to go FBS (1A). This would allow him to end up playing FBS ball without having to sit out a year. That is a pretty good set up for him if that is the case.
