"The people that followed Fulmer(Kiffin, Dooley) those were mistakes. Now you've got the third guy after Fulmer and you've got to ride this one out. Certainly this season can be rescued but really if you look at it big picture wise next season is the one that TN should really be aiming for. That's when the talent should cycle up and have enough experience to really compete for division titles."

Agreed. I was hopeful that we could make it to 8 wins this season, but it doesn't look promising at this point. Next season should be the measuring stick for Butch. I'll hang on to the bandwagon until then, barring a catastrophic end to this season.

I don't know about you but we have been waiting for "next year" for a long time around here.....look at UF, Kentucky getting wins very early in their coaches tenure.....next year the freshman playing will be sophomores and the same excuses will be used.

Been riding this Big Orange steed for over 4 decades, not ever jumping off. It slows every now and then, but someone will apply the spurs to the flanks and off we go.

I have calmed down.

I have to continue to go to games and cheer on the Vols. I am troubled by many of the Saturday decisions I have seen. That said, there is talent on this team and those have 3 losses to good teams. Pissed it has gone this way but if there is any chance that this gets turned around, then I need to hang on for as long as that chance exists.

I said this summer that the Debord hire was a huge mistake, but it is what we have at the moment.

Na, man. If we could line up a real coach, we should kick Butch to the curb regardless of how this season pans out. We've seen that he is a sub-par gameday coach and he doesn't know how to hire good assistants.

Get who? How? Talk "donors" into paying off jones and then fronting for another unproven unknown like Jones (Whittingham)? Or take a chance on a "proven" winner that is having a down year(Just about everyone this year)? Who's to say that Jones's master plan won't actually pan out next year? You guys keep forgetting we all told you 2016, but you had to blindly follow ESPN into sucka' land.

The only reason Tennessee didn't start 4-0 is because of a combination of Butch's fear and stupidity. Things are only going to get worse from here. It has already started with the Arkansas loss.

If and thats a big if they were to fire butch, then they need to throw all the money they possibly can to Dabo Swinney and make him say no!! And even then not sure he would leave clemson anyway.

30 years for me and I've seen some coaches come and go and I've seen some rebuilding happen in that time. Most people only remember the 90s, but forget the 80s and the repair job that happened. Patience is all we need. Sooner or later someone will figure it out!

While I dobt think Jones will ever make it, I am willing to give him another year for a few reasons as long as its not a disastrous 4-8 year.
1 More stability for a program that was on the cusp of falling in the hole for a LONG time before Butch came.
2 Depth is no excuse for the losses but lets be honest, if we want Alabama, LSU, Georgia heck even FLORIDAS quality depth we need another year for some positions while the others
3 Simply need another year of experience. Barnett, Kelly, Berry, Moseley, Kirkland on D and guys like Jack Jones, Hall, Robertson on the OL simply need more time regardless of our opinions of the coaching staff.
4 I'm worried that if 2016 was always the year, if you clean house and players transfer, recruits bail and the vetern Jones team has to learn a new system, it might not go that well and 2017 when a lot of these players are gone it could be starting over for the new coach. So might as well see if the full blown talented, depth-he-wants CBJ team can do something, If you still fire Jones the new coach still starts over in 17 anyway.

So as long as its not a disastrous season, as long as they aren't blown out by UGA and Bama and win some final games, hopefully make a bowl, I think its best for the program to go one more year with Butch.

you mean someone is going to get lucky. Because that's what it takes...right place at the right time. This isn't even football of the nineties. This is insanity. ESPN turned college ball into a pro sport with pro expectations placed on kids. The money has out and out ruined the game. You get 6 months...then your judged. If you lose a game you are OUT!

This post makes too much sense to be on VN.

Why Dabo is a hell of a lot better coach than butch ever thought to be! TN just doesn't want to throw money at a coach that knows how to win!!

Yes that's it! You've finally solved the riddle that's plagued Tennessee football for the last ten years! You're a genius! A hero!.....and a dumbass

TN just doesn't want to throw money at a coach that knows how to win....brilliant

Who? Who are we going to get?

A competent athletic director would fire Butch Jones when he has a better coach willing to take the job. You don't fire a coach, and then start scrambling to find whoever will take the job. Good hires involve perfect timing, which takes a sense of proactiveness.

Let me tell you how Tennessee will operate...

Instead of getting a feel for the Chip Kelly/Jon Gruden situation and then letting that dictate IF you fire Butch Jones, Dave Hart will keep him another year, Chip Kelly will leave Philly and probably take the Texas or SC job, and Tennessee will fire Butch Jones at the end of the 2016 season. One year too late, and then replace Him with another 2 Million per year Mid-Major coach. That is exactly what will happen.

Giving Butch Jones one more year isn't going to fix his inability to win. Winners win and losers lose. Butch Jones hasn't improved in 3 years, why will four matter? Even if he does improve... Is 7-8 wins in year 4 acceptable? With Tennessee's resources I tend to say no.
