Link:Ricky Ross named new South Pittsburg football coach

After helping build one area program into an annual Georgia power, Ricky Ross is getting a chance to head up another perennial power in the area. Ross has been named the new head coach at South Pittsburg, after five years as Calhoun’s defensive coordinator.

Ross, 38, takes over for Vic Grider, who stepped down in December after 16 seasons at his alma mater in which he averaged 11 wins per season, winning three Class 1A state championships and finishing runner-up twice.

Barely two months after accepting the offer to become South Pittsburg’s new football coach, Ricky Ross has informed school athletic director Vic Grider and Marion County schools superintendent Mark Griffith that he will no longer head the program. The former Calhoun (Ga.) defensive coordinator was named the Pirates coach in late January and had begun overseeing offseason weight training. Spring practice had not yet begun.

Wow. Had no idea Grider had stepped down. Heckuva record at the "Beene Bowl". The tradition at South Pitt was started by a 1929 Vol end named L. P. Beene. Great coach that influenced all that came after him. Vic's Father; Don, was an assistant on Beene's staff. So, In reality; South Pittsburg has been an extension of UT for 60+ years. Pirate fans are Exactly as Vols fans -----passionate and fervorous. The Pirates' colors are------ORANGE & Black. Orange being the spirit color; introduced by Mr. Beene himself. FWIW. This hire signals the end of an era.

I wore those colors. L.P. Beene Played for the General !

SP's all time record is 618-226-39 and the majority of those wins were accomplished with the single wing offense and wasn't changed til Vic took over.
Ricky Ross is the 4th coach in 50 years.

The former South Pittsburg all-state offensive lineman, who has been a part of state championships staffs at other programs, has returned to take over at his alma mater.

“It’s very exciting for me to know I’m coming back to coach on the field where I used to play,” Moore said. “It’s one of the most solid programs there is, and that’s always a valued job for any coach. I was interested in it the first time it came open, but my father in law had been ill and I didn’t find out until after the application deadline had passed. So when it came open again, I was thankful to have another chance to apply
