Would a Rick Barnes hire make you happy?

If hired Barnes would have the 2nd most wins in the SEC behind Billy D...he's an underachiever though. Let's take yet another risk at a mid major hire smh.

I'd trade Barnes' last 4 season's for our last 4 any day of the week and twice on sunday.

I look at this like, say.. Texas needing a football coach at the end of 2008, and they say "Well, Fulmer needs a job and he has a great record!" when the reality is that Fulmer was washed up at the end of his career.

Barnes is the basketball version of post-2008 Fulmer. Why would we want that? Insane.

Because comparing football to basketball in this case isn't a legitimate comparison. We have (or at least had) a football team that is traditionally a national championship contender. Our basketball is not. Making the tournament 16 out of 17 years would be a MASSIVE change(even 7 of 8) from our history(sans the Pearl era). Fulmer wasn't even making bowls consistently when he was let go. Barnes made the tournament THIS year.

It's not like that at all and thats a bad comparison

Texas & Tennessee are both powerhouse football programs, they have enough prestige where they don't have to hire leftovers of the other

Tennessee basketball would be equivalent to some lower level Big 10 football team, like Purdue, hiring Fulmer after we let him go

lol, the guy who has two seasons under his belt and zero NCAA Tournament wins?

That's it with these guys...they want flash over substance..speculation over a proven resume...they want a young good looking coach in a 5k suit that will cock chop the opposing coach instead of shaking their hand

And not only did he make the tourney this year, he was the conference coach of the year last year. The reason people were disappointed was because expectations were so high this year, and he didn't meet them.

Heck I'd just like to have expectations get that high for us

I totally get it, they want to gamble and somehow the coach turn into the next Pearl/Izzo/whoever. But you don't gamble with the type of guys we'd have to gamble with, that's like playing blackjack where "hit me" means they drop two cards at once instead of one

Hell, you're preaching to a fanbase that complained about a sweet 16 run and then considered a 16-16 run over achievement.
Need I say more?

As I said last night, it would be like Kentucky hiring Mack Brown in football, which I think their fans would be happy with. UT football and basketball are totally different situations.

Well first off, Tennessee basketball >>> UK football

But I see your point

You've given nothing of substance but all your bs about how pitiful the program is. It's obvious you know nothing about how a college AD works and specifically the UT AD. Every time you add crap degrading the program to the point of making ****e up about NCAA sanctions when none are pending. You shouldn't even call yourself a fan. I suspect you're a fairly young dude. Good luck with your coaching. Make sure before the season you tell your players which ones they should win and which ones they should lose.

And since you're so caught up on reading comprehension, maybe you should go back read my post again, smart guy. I said all along I fully expect UT to "settle" for another ho-hum hire.

And why don't you post that link where we face possible NCAA sanctions. Since you're the only one that seems to know about them why don't you enlighten us?

I truly do not understand what you mean about nothing of substance. Every single thing I said was absolute fact. I said possible, and when your coach deleted emails while at your school about an investigation then yes it makes sanctions possible as I said. Coaches think about things like that you see. Please tell me what is not true that I said, and I full on know how it works. I played college baseball, and deal with college coaches in both football and baseball.

I have no idea what this has to do with me as a fan. Just bc I'm not an idiot of a fan and think that Gregg Marshall and Coach K are possibilities. I would love nothing more for us to hire the big name but it is not happening and to think so is just foolish. This is not a David vs Goliath issue as you imply with the whole telling my kids which to win or lose. My boys can beat anyone and are coached that way. This has nothing what so ever to do with that this is business and that is all.

You keep looking at this from a personal, emotional viewpoint and that is not how these coaches look at it. I told you why we will not get a big name and all you do is say I make false points, please refute them. This job is barely a second tier job right now and I pray we get a rick Barnes.

I love TN more than I can ever possibly put into words. But as I've stated around 10 times now we are not attractive to big names right now. We have the potential to be a great job again but it will take a couple years if build up. We need stability and Barnes would bring that. I imagine it's us or Bama, and it will be tough to out bid them.

We could definitely do worse. We could also possibly do better.

It really comes down to being whether the fanbase will be happy with a high floor (probably minimum 20-21 win seasons once he gets established) and a low ceiling (don't expect SEC conference/tournament championships or anything beyond a Sweet 16).

The alternative is that Hart takes a swing on an up and comer like Wade or Underwood. Those guys could turn to be the next Coach K or they could turn out to be the next Tony Barbee.

If Hart wants an established coach, Barnes has gotta be his man.

Barnes is old.
However if he coaches at TN until he is eligible for his maximum Social Security benefits he will have been at TN longer than any UT coach in nearly three decades.

Barnes was fired.
Yes, but if he would have thrown his staff under the bus he would still be the Texas coach. That shows a lot of character.

Plus he has recruited well and has coached for a couple of decades without getting blown up by the NCAA.

TN will be fine as long as they hire a competent Power 5 conference coach. The resources and passionate fans make up for a less than perfect coach. It would be riskier to roll the dice on an up and coming mid-major guy that hasn't yet proven he'll get to the NCAAT.

Hire Barnes, plan for him to retire sometime in the next 7-10 years and pass an unbroken program off to the next guy. I'm tired of all of the carnage from fired and quitter coaches. It's time to build some stability even if it isn't a S16 every other year.

AD told him to fire assistants and he'd be employed, he refused hence he's gone. Sounds like Cutcliffe at Ole Miss. Look what Ole Miss went through until landing Freeze, meanwhile Cuts winning 10 games in back to back years and playing for ACC titles at freaking Duke. Ole Miss looked like idiots for 7-8 years.

Cuts washed up though cause he's old and was fired by Ole Miss.

The emails you reference were from an account from USM. It has been reported by several media outlets that UT faces zero NCAA penalties from the Tyndall stuff. UT is NOT under investigation. Again your claims are NOT factual but 100% false.

I have asked you several times what makes this a dumpster fire and you've come up with lack of funds and I've refuted that. Then you said national perception and I've asked for examples of that and other than your opinion you've offered northing. I've conceded that the perception of our AD is probably poor because of their lack of support for the bb program. You mentioned our fan base having unrealistic expectations and you've provided nothing to back that up while I've offered up the fact that we've seen 15k in attendance with a lame duck coach, rag tag group of players, and a .500 record.

And I'm the emotional one? I am looking at things much more open minded than you as you are simply repeating what some hack reporter at ESPN tells you.

I think it's pretty simple, you think the UT program is a flaming pile of dog doo while I don't think it's that bad. Is it as attractive a historically good program, no? But it's on par with most current job openings. We could attract a bigger name coach if we paid said coach. That's one reason these coaches don't take us serious is because we won't pay what it takes. That is our reputation.

Yup. To all of this.
