Would a Rick Barnes hire make you happy?

Barnes can recruit at Texas, getting mostly kids from Texas, to the flagship program in Texas. How does that translate to recruiting at UT? Do you think it translates? Rick Barnes was not considered a top notch recruiter when he went to Texas, but it didn't matter to Texas, because the name on the jersey takes care of recruiting.

Don't know for sure, but it does mean something when you can say that he has KD, Lamarcus Aldridge, and Avery Bradley on speed dial. Durant and Bradley aren't even from Texas. Bradley is from the state of Washington. Is the name on the front that different from UT? Facilities are good at our UT, and Knoxville gets praise from recruits.

Holtmann gets credit for coaching this years team. In which he exceeded expectations. And he has a track record of improving every team he's coached in his HC career. So it's clearly appropriate to give him credit for doing it this year.

not denying that. I said I'd like to see him with more sustained success. He did well this year. And at Gardner Webb. But that's Gardner Webb. Butler is Butler. Dunham, Jones and Woods are all Stephens/Miller recruits. Call it whatever you want, but Hurley gets a push just on his name. Players will come because of his past. He doesn't have the coaching resume of Holtmann, but I'd take Prohm and White's coaching history over Holtmann. Holtmann doesn't have the name and history that Hurley does. I don't just look at one thing in a decision process like this. Recruiting is a big issue at a school like Tennessee. I'd think Hurley can bring in some players because, well, he's Bobby Hurley. So many will pass that off as me being a fan, but it doesn't take the fact of it away.

I can't see them spending over $2. That's just a number that I've come to in my head. Remember that Butch is in the $3 range and I can't see them getting close to Butch. If they spend $3 it will show how desperate they are to get it right. Barnes is definitely the safe hire and I can see them going that route.

Ok, I see. Yeah, we should not be afraid to shell out 2M, and Barnes should not be above refusing it IMO.

Texas is paying his buyout. Which means he'll make the difference of his salary at Texas and the salary here. We could pay him 1.8 mil and he'd make the other 700k from Texas.

This thing should move quickly.

No? They're going to Texas because it's effing Texas and Kevin Durant and several other NBA players went there. It's a gateway to the NBA, Barnes or no Barnes. Marshall will get players to the NBA just the same if he goes there.

No they aren't. The Texas basketball program isn't that big. Barnes has half of their NCAAT appearances. They have a total of 32, and Barnes had 16 there. Let that sink in.

I agree that the new coach will get Texas talent, but Barnes got more than that.

I don't disagree with that.

I do think Holtmann is a good coach and will continue to get results.

You might be living a little in the Rick Barnes past. His current roster has only 1 kid that didn't play high school basketball in Texas, and that kid is from New Orleans.

Durant is from Washington DC.

Kevin Durant wasn't the Kevin Durant we all know when Rick Barnes recruiting him. He was a kid that bounced around to 3 different high schools and grew 5 inches after he committed to Texas. Great player, but he wasn't a huge recruiting get for Texas when Barnes signed him up, and Barnes had no idea he was going to go from a 6-6 wing to a 6-11 freak.

It's not nearly as easy to recruit to Tennessee as it is to Texas. I don't think we'd exactly be courting a constant stream of 2* and 3* guys but it wouldn't exactly be Kevin Durants and Avery Bradleys walking through the door.

Another misconception. Tennessee has signed just as many 4 and 5 stars in the past 5-10 years As Texas. The difference is the ones Texas signed played better. so he's doing a great job evaluating and/or developing players relative to Pearl/Zo.

PJ Tucker was a 3 star.

Will be the new coach. Press conference at 11:00 am Tuesday. Be paid 2.3 million/4 years. All speculation just like everyone else is
