again, Butler's expecations were better before Miller had to leave. around fourth or fifth. And again, it was Miller's team.

Not sure what you're referring to. Butler was picked to finish 7th this year. And last years butler team was not good. So he took a program that hit a wall after Stevens left and turned them around into tournament winners in his first year.

Holtmann has been very consistent in his head coaching career of outperforming. Moreso than Bobby hurley.

I agree but one of two things will have to happen, Barnes takes a paycut or TN pays significantly more than they have ever before. I don't think they will. Does Barnes take a pay cut?

What do you think the market is like for him now? I'd be surprised if he gets paid as much as he was at Texas no matter where he goes...

So Miller took on a rebuild after Stephens left, set up a team, and because he had to leave, Holtmann gets all the credit? I can't quite put that idea together in my head.

And. They were picked seventh in mid October, after Miller left. Over the summer, there was much more optimism.

It's not nearly as easy to recruit to Tennessee as it is to Texas. I don't think we'd exactly be courting a constant stream of 2* and 3* guys but it wouldn't exactly be Kevin Durants and Avery Bradleys walking through the door.

That's my concern. Can Barnes start out-coaching more talented teams?

I don't know what his salary is, but if it's 3M or less, I would support UT matching it. JMO. Let's be honest, we're all in the dark on how much UT is willing to shell out.

This is just a hunch, I could be completely wrong, but I think Hart will shell out for a coach like Barnes (more experienced, lengthy resume), and if that fails, offer a Martin/Tyndall-esque contract to an up-and-comer.

I don't know that's why I asked. He may be ok with taking less money. He seems like a very honorable guy so I'm sure he has his assistant coaches in mind. He could accept less just to take care of his assistants. I think I saw he made $2.5 At TX. I would think he would need $2 here.

I can't see them spending over $2. That's just a number that I've come to in my head. Remember that Butch is in the $3 range and I can't see them getting close to Butch. If they spend $3 it will show how desperate they are to get it right. Barnes is definitely the safe hire and I can see them going that route.

Texas is paying his buyout. Which means he'll make the difference of his salary at Texas and the salary here. We could pay him 1.8 mil and he'd make the other 700k from Texas.

This thing should move quickly.

Holtmann gets credit for coaching this years team. In which he exceeded expectations. And he has a track record of improving every team he's coached in his HC career. So it's clearly appropriate to give him credit for doing it this year.

I think they meet in the middle with incentives. I hope Barnes wants to be here and being let go has lit afire in him.
One thing is certain, he and his staff can recruit. Why can't you recruit to UT? We have great facilities and a passionate fan base. This has potential to be very good, if he and his staff come with passion.

I am not endorsing Barnes, just my opinion if he gets the job.

I agree we're not going to attract a 2.5-3 mil coach But we are shooting for the $200-$700k coaches. What about the $1-1.5mil coaches that won't look our way? We could double their salary. The fact is the UTAD places no importance on basketball.

It just depends on that coach's situation. I was just using numbers as a reference. But there are good coaches who will not leave their current situation just because more money is offered. Just a different time. It is also about timing.

I am as competitive as the next guy, and I have spent money traveling for UT sports, both football and basketball. I will watch anything that has UT on it. But realistically, our basketball program has some issues. I am just tired of hiring a coach every 3-4 years. Some of it is just bad luck, but some of it is hiring cheap coaches who have to learn on the job. The reason why I support a Barnes hire is because his record is really good (even underachieving) and we just need someone to make it a better job for the future. We don't need a gamble.

I've seen my fair share of Big 12 basketball the last few years. (Cousin goes to Iowa State.) He gets about two really good wins a year and some UGLY losses to go with it.

Barnes can recruit at Texas, getting mostly kids from Texas, to the flagship program in Texas. How does that translate to recruiting at UT? Do you think it translates? Rick Barnes was not considered a top notch recruiter when he went to Texas, but it didn't matter to Texas, because the name on the jersey takes care of recruiting.

I could get on board with Barnes. I think the points you make about him being rejuvenated are valid. I think he could recruit well as his name will carry a lot of weight. Also, he appears to be a young 60. I couldn't believe he was 60 when I heard. Another factor is we don't have to pay a buyout either.

Another factor is we don't know how the big money boosters feel about this. By all accounts they were in full support of Donnie until the real facts came out. I wonder if some wish they had supprted Pearl a little more in hind sight. With the football program looking so promising, do they throw their hands up in digust or do they make a commitment to do what it takes to turn it around?

Hey, I have a twin! I am right with you. I have grown very cynical in regards to the UT AD. I think all of our BB problems are a direct result of an AD that doesn't have a desire to have a tip flight BB program.

I know everyone has their own opinions, but I think Barnes is the best realistic candidate. At this point, I would prefer a solid and seasoned coach (and you can 100% make a case to call him a good coach) than to roll the dice on an up-and-comer. If we can keep a coach like Barnes for at least 5 years and make at least more than one NCAA appearance, that would give us the stability and relative success we desperately need. If he can continue to be competitive after a few years, great. If not, we will at least have had some stability and the next coaching change won't be nearly as turbulent.

Of course, all of this depends on if he can get ~20+ wins per year and some NCAA appearances. I could be dead wrong, but I give him the benefit of the doubt at this point that he can recruit and coach well enough to be around 20 wins in year 2.

I agree with this. Been saying since it was a possibility.

Again you guys act like Barnes is bringing in big time recruits to Ames, Iowa. This is Texas, the biggest athletic university in the country with the most money out of anyone. HE WOULD NOT HAVE THE SAME RESULTS HERE.,

They're not going to Texas becuase of that. They're going to Texas because of the coach, they could care less if Texas is "the biggest athletic university"

No? They're going to Texas because it's effing Texas and Kevin Durant and several other NBA players went there. It's a gateway to the NBA, Barnes or no Barnes. Marshall will get players to the NBA just the same if he goes there.

He and his staff have built recruiting connections all over the country. IMO they would bring in better players than CCM and CDT.
