No one negotiated down a buyout. Dave Hart had it in his contract for the buyout to be paid off $1 million per year.

If i were Fulmer I would say ok we will lower to 3.5 million buyout but your football team soon will have to play us 2 home games with no return game in LA and you dont get a check for playing in the games. That will make them decide if they want to pay the 5 million. And if they accept the 3.5 or similar. We know the revenue our home football games make for us. So that could be added financial way to recoup whatever coach we go afters salaries.

That is possible, too, because at the end of the day it is his legal obligation, not UCLA’s. But his response will be that their offer doesn’t make sense if he has to pay the buyout. They either pay it or he walks.
