Huh?Well, can't find the link! Hopefully a moot point anyway since we have a different athletic director now.
If Barnes really is a legitimate contender for UCLA (which I believe is questionable), I would expect him to jump at the offer. I don't buy the "loves Tennessee" and "California is too expensive" angles. It would be a nice upgrade for Barnes.
While that makes sense, Barnes is closer to retirement than Pearl. Question is how Barnes views a path to a natty the the rest of his career. With solid recruiting, UCLA could easily be back to a top program in the country.
UCLA has been idiots with this 4 month coaching search so they could be desperate and want to throw money at top names. Barnes could just be on their list.
It's all speculation, and mine is that he would chase the paper. I would also speculate that if these reports are accurate, UCLA understands the financial implications.Huh?
His wife is a UT grad. He’s from the south. LA is about as unBarnes as you can get. Can’t imagine UCLA would pay a $5 mil buyout and $5ion salary for a coach at his age. If they do the more power to them. And if Barnes bites then he wasn’t who we thought he was.
UCLA isn’t the same job Wooden had. It’s playing in a 12k arena, half full and they’re at least the 3rd biggest name in town behind Lakers and Clippers. All games now are on TV but most of UCLAs games are at 11pm on East coast, where majority of 5* kids are. That wasn’t the case in the 60s and early 70s. If Barnes wants that job, good luck.
