Rick Barnes: Estrella seems fine, but we’ll see

Generally, ACL tears can be diagnosed in the trainers room with a specific test. Seems unlikely he has this right now. That's not to say couldn't have torn meniscus or medial ligaments in knee which is more like 4-6 week injury.

Very least, I doubt we see JP until after Thanksgiving even if he had most mild strain just given how many games back to back in short time frame.
Yeah, and that's kind of a bummer if that is the case. JP is going to be a problem for everyone we play because he's such a potent offensive threat. Better to have him at 100% for the start of league play

JP is one of my favorite players on team, high energy, talks on defense and is a solid post player. I pray he is ok, he has earned the right to play big minutes this season!
I didn't see it (past my bedtime last night). I started Coach Lanier's press conference video this morning and when he asked about JP I felt sick. Please let this kid be okay.

Trainers can usually tell an ACL injury with about 99% certainty in 5 minutes, the fact Barnes says that would make me think he’s gotten some reason for optimism, but we’ll see.
Please, please, please...this team seemed to start jelling last night and I have my orange-tinted glasses on big time.....I love watching Estrella play ball...and we need him this year.

They can definitely be...most are, but typically the contact form comes from a hit to the side of the knee. That isn't to say a hyperextension like we saw with JP cannot lead to an ACL tear. It's just less common.

My guess, if they feared an ACL, it's doubtful he goes back to the bench, and even less doubtful he does so without crutches.

Let's just hope for the best.
Exactly...and they would have had a brace - not just a bag of ice. I was somewhat relieved when they showed that shot of him on the bench.

Edit: Can't believe the TV producers never thought to show any kind of replay especially with diff angles. It looked to me when I replayed it the guy drove forward with his forearm into JP's knee which would be consistent with a hyperextension injury.

From the way they were icing it, I’m going with contusion as my guess. Not a ligament tear as it wasn’t acute/non contact or caved in from contact. I did not see much of a hyper extension. He wears a leg sleeve so I believe there’s some tendonitis or tenderness going on and any shot on patellar tendon area of tendonitis will hurt and send pain up and down the leg.
If I hyperextend my leg, I’m icing my entire knee as the lower quad and knee joint would need treatment. Looked like the ice bag was on front of his bended knee so I’m gonna go with an accidental shot to a tender area.

I had to rewind myself because Bradshaw said they weren't going to show the replay due to its gruesome nature (something to that effect).

The mechanics of the hit to his knee did not look like that of an ACL injury. Doesn't mean it can't be that, but I'd be a little surprised if it were that.
The trainers do a locker room test to determine the likelihood of any ligament injury. If they think there’s ligament damage, modern protocol demands they go immediately for an mri. Him returning was a really good sign. As you noted last night, the injury definitely looked like the jolt of a hyperextension and not a lateral flex.

What are you, a doctor now?

I’ll take any and every win no matter how we get them through the first half of this year, this was already a team with a ton of new faces that was gonna take awhile to gel, now you’ve had Boswell and Estrella both missing time…just try to get healthy while stacking some wins and continue to improve throughout.
The team is improving it appears but like you said it is gonna take some time to gel and experience.

Just saw him while I was on a walk. He is on crutches now, and his leg seems to be wrapped up pretty much the entire length of his leg. It did not look like he had a brace on, just a wrap to reduce swelling if i had to guess. I would highly doubt he's going to be available this weekend.
I think playing anytime soon was almost certainly off the table. Best case scenario is likely being back for Louisville on 12/16. That would be missing 6 games, but a month of recovery.

If he's somehow available for Illinois 10 days earlier (12/6), I'd sign up for that outcome right now.
