Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Yes, when Barnes retires. Obviously UT isn't ever going to let him go, and they shouldn't. He'll go out on his own terms. But I was told we could never pull anyone as good as Musselman because Arky is a basketball school even though his record this year sucks and he's making 1.5 million per year less than Barnes.
I certainly wouldn't trade Barnes for Musselman right now.

I certainly wouldn't trade Barnes for Musselman right now.
I recognize his winning percentage is strong but to me, Musselman is the least likable SEC coach based on his in game demeanor and antics. I don’t like his musical chairs style of annual roster turnover. When CRB retires I wouldn’t want Musselman as the replacement. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP

Remember when we were going to miss the tourney, but then Covid cancelled the tournament and kept our veterans around for 2 extra years?

Some of you need to remember that we haven’t been exceptionally great. We’ve had exceptional circumstances.

Getting ranked is really cool and makes it easier to check on our scores on espn.com. That’s about it. Maybe that meant something when the media decided the national champion(s) but we have a playoffs now days and we haven’t finished inside the top 8 since 2010.
Keep moving the goal posts to fit whatever narrative you want to present…the point about rankings was it’s a reflection of the programs stature, this is the best the program has ever been, not debatable. And something tells me of Barnes were to reach an Elite 8 you’ll quickly shift your narrative to something else.

Maybe not the GOAT but multiple posters have suggested we can never do better than Barnes. Hell I was mocked and flamed for suggesting we could maybe pull Eric Musselman who is *checks notes* 9-4 at Arky this year entering conference play...in his 5th year.
Please bump all these posters who said we can never do better than Barnes.

And don't even try to equate the reasonable posters who basically pointed out hiring a coach is risky (as we all witnessed our football program for the last ~20 years). Next, explain why we should take such a risk when we are setting all time records for our program.

You don’t have to be curious. I am responding to the cool-aid kids who trumpet how Barnes has made every single tournament. I just like to keep things even, and not shoot my mouth off about how awesome something is or how terrible it is.

Some people see facts as inconvenient but keeping it real is always the way to go. That’s how we grow up to be decent humans and not insufferable (the woe is me crowd) or con artists (everything is awesome crowd).

You call me negative? I don’t know what you’re trying to sell, but if it can’t include the truth, then stay out of my space.
Since you like to "keep things even" (lol), here's some inconvenient facts courtesy of @YankeeVol - you should try reading his gameday posts

NEWS & NOTES

• Rick Barnes and Chris Beard are both former head coaches at Texas. Barnes went 402-180 (.691) across 17 seasons, while Beard posted a 29-13 (.690) ledger over two campaigns.
• Tennessee associate head coach Justin Gainey and Ole Miss assistant coach Al Pinkins were teammates at NC State in 1996-97, aiding first-year head coach Herb Sendek to a 17-15 record.
• Santiago Vescovi is the fourth SEC player in the last 20 years to record at least 1,400 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists, joining Georgia's Sundiata Gaines (2004- 08), Mississippi State's Jamont Gordon (2005-08) and Georgia's Charles Mann (2012-16). The only other Vol ever to hit those marks is Allan Houston (1989-93).
• Zakai Zeigler has posted four- plus made 3-pointers in two of the last three games after doing so twice in his first 75 outings. In that same span, Tobe Awaka has twice grabbed 10-plus rebounds after doing so twice in his first 43 games and also posted his first collegiate double-double.
• The Vols are 15-6 at home against AP top-25 teams under Rick Barnes, including 12-3 while also ranked. UT has won 10 such games in a row, going back to 1/30/21.
• Tennessee finished off a fourth consecutive undefeated non- conference home slate. It has now won 28 such games in a row, dating back to the 2020-21 season opener (11/8/20). The Vols have wins over schools such as Arizona, Cincinnati, Colorado, Illinois and Kansas during that stretch.
• In non-conference action, Dalton Knecht averaged 18.6 ppg in seven games against Power Six teams, posting 16-plus six times and 20-plus thrice, while shooting 14-of-33 (42.4%) from deep. In the other six outings, he averaged 12.2 ppg with 16-plus points twice and a high of 18, while going 7-of-25 (28.0%) from long range.
• In the win over Norfolk State (1/2/24), Tennessee became the first team to hold a DI foe without multiple assists while recording at least 21 (for a plus-20 margin) since Gonzaga on 2/9/19 against Saint Mary's.

RACKING UP RANKED VICTORIES

• Over the past four seasons (2020-24), Tennessee leads all SEC teams in AP top-25 wins with 16, a figure that is co-eighth nationally. It is also tied for with Arkansas for first among SEC schools in AP top- 10 victories with seven, placing co-fifth nationally. UT's five AP top-five wins in that span pace the SEC and are tied for the most of any team in America.
• The seven AP top-10 triumphs during that time are: #1 Alabama (2/15/23), #3 Kansas (11/25/22), #3 Auburn (2/26/22), #4 Kentucky (2/15/22), #5 Kentucky (3/12/22), #6 Arizona (12/22/21) and #10 Texas (1/28/23).
• Over the last four seasons (2020-24), Tennessee has played a league-high 30 games against AP Top 25 opponents, going 16-14 (.533). The Vols are the only SEC team, regardless of number of games, with a winning record against ranked foes during that span, while Alabama is second at 13-15 (.464).
• Tennessee (30), Alabama (28) and Arkansas (28) are the only SEC teams to play over 25 ranked opponents since the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

WINNING WAYS

• Over the last seven seasons, dating back to the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Tennessee leads all SEC teams in total victories (154; T-1st) and postseason wins (15), while placing a close second in winning percentage (.720).
• In that span, the Vols have claimed a pair of SEC championships, winning the regular season in 2018 and the tournament in 2022. In that same seven-year stretch, the Vols are one of only three SEC schools with an overall winning percentage over .700, alongside Auburn (.723) and Kentucky (.705). No other SEC team is at even .670.
• In regular season SEC play over the same seven-year period, Tennessee (74-33) owns a league-best .706 winning percentage and joins Kentucky (72-35) as the only programs to log at least 70 league victories
• Over the last three seasons only (2021-24), UT owns a 62-22 (.738) overall record. That is good for the most victories and the best winning percentage of any SEC team in that span.

It's important to post this fact about Rick Barnes from time to time. For no other reason than to remind his detractors. When UK fired Tubby, they threw EVERYTHING, including the kitchen sink, at Barnes to come be the head coach at The University of Kentucky. He declined to stay at Texas. Way down the road from that, UCLA saw he was still great by reinvigorating UT to national prominence. They offered. Yes, he got hefty raises to stay at both places. So facking what?

I think we're DAMN lucky to have him. What coach can claim that the 2 bluest of bloods in college basketball offered the top job? He doesn't cheat. He's a straight shooter. He loves coaching. He loves teaching.

GTFO on moving on from him until he's ready to hang it up. Please

Strong, centered post! 💪
It amazes me he has detractors. I guess a big part of that is a failure to recognize character.

Why would Musselman make that move? Arkansas is a better basketball school than UT.

His earning potential at UT is much greater, coupled with the fact that he would step into a better situation. That being said, we don't want him right now. He ain't Barnes.

I’m not sure his earning potential is greater at Tennessee. Arkansas has some wealthy and influential donors. If Musselman ever truly flirted with leaving, Arkansas could easily match whatever offer he gets elsewhere.

I agree that's possible, but he would be gone if Barnes won it all and retired, and he was offered the job. Two years from now, too! Doug F'ing Dickey is not running the AD anymore

Wish VN would quit calling everyone "troll" who doesn't agree with them.
If everyone agreed, this would be a very dull board.

Look at the posts calling people “troll” or “ignorant” and ask if the name callers look any different.

In fact, it is because these same name callers have attacked anyone who didn’t agree with them that I felt compelled to argue against them. If that isn’t the definition of troll, then there is no such thing.

But, I can’t imagine choosing to be here if not for the sake of entertainment. It’s a forum based on a subject of entertainment and the folks come here because they are not entertained enough. So carry on with your name calling or contrary arguments. It’s all the same.

That’s rich. Says he’s not joining “the cult” while swinging on Bruce’s sweaty b*** ***k. Hilarious.

I can’t imagine why you hate Bruce Pearl so much. Does that have something to do with your thoughts of his sweaty genitalia? Did he break your heart?!

Wait, I guess I did imagine.. You troll!!!
